Mayor Ardis wants Peoria to become a test city for concealed-carry legislation. I don't dislike Mayor Ardis, but on a smaller scale, he kind of does for me, what Ken Hinton does for a lot of you. :) I ofen find myself asking "wth"? To raise the highly excitable issue of concealed carry at a time when the City of Peoria is in the midst of a rash of shootings - once again I am left asking "wth".
I hope that he has seen the ignorant, immature comments in the Journal Star in response to his suggestion. I pray that he will be embarassed by what he sees there and drops the issue. If you arm these people along with the criminals and the police, it's time for Granny (and everybody else) to get her gun.
(Granny already got the gun, just need to get her papers in order).

I'm not quite sure what everyone is afraid of. Violent lawbreakers already carry concealed weapons. What have we to fear from law-abiding citizens doing the same?
And if we abandoned every idea that elicited "ignorant, immature comments in the Journal Star," we'd never do anything.
...the Journal Star has been known to have "ignorant immature comments", but this time we are talking about people w/guns.
The Peoria Police may have some internal issues they need to iron out, however, I would hope that we can trust that they have the wherewithal to keep the law abiding citizens of Peoria safe.
I've been told by a credible source that you can buy a pistol downtown for $20 with the serial number already scraped off.
Mayor Ardis is suggesting only that we level the playing field. If you take the knee-jerk reaction out of it and look only at the stats it would be the right thing to do.
OMG! I actually agree with Diane.
I don't want to live in a society that condones gun violence of any kind. I refuse to be afraid and feel that I have to "arm" myself to level some sort of non-existent playing field. I won't buy into the culture of fear that some would suggest is present nor will I give my children the impression they have to.
The main problem I see with the law is that now there will be more guns for children to find--I just hope the law-abiding citizens with guns will keep them out of reach of children. Otherwise, I really don't know how I feel about the proposal--I see both sides. Like so many issues, I guess I'll just have to wait to see how it plays out.
Emerge - Yep! I feel the same way.
Frankly, I have always thought that store owners/shop owners should be allowed to keep a firearm at their place of business. Homeowners already can. No problems there. The SA has already recognized people's right to self-defense in their homes with firearms.
So now it's like the wild wild west where everyone on the street or in their car is packing heat? Really? This will stop crime? Prayers and guns. Goodness, if that's the best we can come up with, Mr. Ardis, Peoria is indeed in sad, sad shape. The thug robbing you with your gun will be a real sense of safety, no? Who can get their gun out before the thug gets theirs out?
I get why some people would like to carry a gun. And in theory I am fine with it. However, if someone tries to steal your purse in the wal mart parking lot and you decide to defend your self, only you are all jacked up on adrenaline and aren't the greatest shot. I don't want to get caught in the cross fire, while I'm dorking around arranging the carts at the cart carrel.
I agree with you VBC. We will now have a town full of inexperienced, scared people who do not have no knowledge what so ever other than to point and shoot.
If this law passes, I will feel compelled to purchase a gun...
I saw a cute little piece with a pearl handle. I would probably start to wear garters and strap it to my thigh. Yeah, that would be cool - sexy right - on the Mrs. Smith tip...
(...naw, it may be difficult to get to considering I don't usually wear dresses).
Okay... I would get a cute little Coach holster that matches my purse and my wallet and my key chain and my boots...
This gun thing has some fashion possibilities...
I think there will be little "pins" you can wear on your purse or jacket that indicate you're packin'. Sort of like the "ADT" or home defense system signs you can put in your yard to ward off the bad guys.
Emerge, resist the temptation to get a little gun. It would seem they would be easier to shoot but they are in fact the opposite. The smaller the gun, the greater the kick and the more difficult it is to control. You want a nice heavy metal one with a texturized handle for a firm grasp. Guys seem to like Glocks but a Bersa seems be more of a chick gun. Don't worry about the fashion angle. Then you have to go to a shooting range and fire it frequently until it becomes second nature. You'll be a pro in no time just in time for the passage of conceal carry. Voila! No more worrying at night about what that thump was.
Diane:
I don't intend to use it, just look good carrying it. :).
I was kidding about getting a gun... I have no need to carry a gun. I have lived in the inner city of cities much rougher than Peoria. I am pretty good at staying safe. For the most part Peoria is a pizzacake (two of my favorite foods). Thanks for the tips though.
