JAY-Z started spreadin’ the news in September, and since then he has taken every prominent opportunity to remind us: he has a candidate for a new New York anthem, and he wants our votes.
Hardly. Although I like the song, it's never going to be the new anthem for the city. The thing that Sinatra's New York New York has that Jay-Z's song won't have is longevity and mass appeal. Sinatra recorded his version of the song in 1980. Come back in 30 years and tell me if people are rockin' Jay-Z at the end of Yankee games. Stadiums of people can sing along to the hook, but not the entire song. The lyrics are self serving and tout how great Jay-Z is more than how great the city is. Just saying New York in a song isn't enough to become the city's theme.
