The Lathan Presser - she speaks

It appears she is already having input in administrative matters, I find that encouraging...

Is that Terry Knapp's voice on Video #3, asking about the teacher's union? How did he get into the press conference?

I listened but I didn't recognize the voice. I did call Terry, and he said he wasn't invited--that he'll have to wait for his five minutes at board meetings. I especially like what Lathan said about principals having to be in the trenches--to model how to teach and to make out lesson plans. I think that is a great idea. I believe the demands principals make would be more realistic if they actually had to carry out their own directives.

Emerge - Thank you for posting the video. I just finally watched it all. I am loving her, so far!!! Tough, confident, but still warm and engaging. Not seeing a lot of ego in her, which has been such a fatal flaw in much of the leadership in Peoria in the past.

Do you know if the new organizational chart she and the Board have developed is available to the general public yet?

Liked her point about principals and their duty to provide "instructional leadership" for their building. When talking to my children's primary school principal in years past, I got the sense there was no encouragement or rewards on the part of the District to have the principal generate a curriculum ( in collaboration with teaching staff) that was a "best fit" for the particular school. Instead, it seemed like a one-size fits all mandate from Central Administration. Besides offering more choice within the District, if neighborhood schools are to be successful, they need to do a better job meeting individual students needs. That did not happen to any great degree at the primary school my children attended.

Frustrated, I too am excited about the instructional leadership way of thinking. To often principals inadvertently stop teachers from meeting individual student needs by insisting they stick to what came out of the can (purchased by adminstration).

I have seen the magical learning environments that can develop once principals have the leeway to work with teachers to develop the standard and then get out of the classroom.

I agree, first impressions of the new Super are good.

getting my feet wet with 1st post on this blog.

thanks for compliment, emerge.

Only media was there. Not sure
who asked question about unions.
Might have been WCBU.

Andre Bohannon was also present,
but his question was not about unions.
