Last week ten District 150 clerical workers who got a raise were publicly vilified by their union and the pjstar.
The Local 6099 union representatives went on record spitting all kinds of nonsense. Namely that the union dues had not been adjusted for these ten cheaters, these clerical workers who dared to take a raise.
NOW here we are days later and the Local 6099 union representative admits that these ten cheating clerical workers really did nothing wrong in relation to paying their union dues. NOW he admits dues are recalculated only once annually at the end of a school year. So, the 10 workers weren't supposed to pay extra dues yet.
From what I have heard from a few sources (e.g. this is a rumor) a former union representative, who herself is a low paid secretary knew of the raises and couldn't finagle one for herself (after all, these are all her friends who buy make-up products from her, so surely they can break her off). After they didn’t break her off a piece THEN she went to the union.
Offices full of secretaries are known for their bitch fights. This one looks really bad on all concerned – thanks to the Local 6099. It is unfortunate that people pay dues for this petty, backbiting type of representation.

Now that's what I call criminal.

Oh, Emerge, you are so funny to put this spin on it. Blame it on the ONE who didn't get the raise, What about the other 100 that didn't get the raise? Or the ones whose jobs are being pink slipped? This isn't the blame of backbiting. This is what happens when things are done underhandedly and unfairly. If there was nothing wrong with it, why were they told to keep it secret? There's your first clue.
When there is no money for students (summer school, teacher's aides, librarians, etc.) why does money magically appear for secretaries?
Thanks Anonymous, yeah I have all kinds of jokes...
Don't get me wrong, this still looks crazy shady - I'm just saying there is more to this story.
I would be upset to if I had been sitting around letting my union negotiate my pay for years and I was only making peanuts, only to find out it is possible to get paid more for what I do.
If clerical workers must be a part of a union, they need their own unions dedicated to their needs.
I still believe there is more to this story. No one, as yet, has explained to my satisfaction why these 10 people in these two particular departments received the raises. I find it very difficult to believe that an administrator, even though new to the district, would risk (withouta very good reason) this sort of culpability to give some secretaries such huge raises. Union practices can't be that foreign to even a new administrator. The very fact that the receivers were told not to tell anyone waves a great big red flag. I know that at the high school level some teachers were sometimes given one-time sums for doing special jobs, etc.--and that sometimes these "gifts" were not exactly fair. But to give a permanent hourly raise is quite different than a one-time "bonus" for doing a particular job. Everyone knows that these hourly wages are negotiated and that everyone is treated alike based on job classification and probably years served, etc. Individuals just don't negotiate their own salary increases.
If this were a right to work state then these secretaries wouldn't be required to be in the union in order to work there. Which is as it should be. Why are liberals so in favor of choice for abortion, but against choice of union representation?
You lost me - what do abortions and unions have in common?
By the way - I am not opposed to unions, they are a necessary evil (just like politicians).
I was commenting on the "choice" issue and how liberals support choice in one area (e.g. abortion) and deny it in another (right to work).
