Today is the last day of school for District 150. Here's the zinger... for primary school the start time is 10:00 - they get out at 11:00.
I have never been more happy for a school year to end than I am today. TYJStudent: Why do we have to come just for an hour?
Teacher: ......
Student: Some of us ride the bus and we don't know what time it will be coming.
Teacher: That's not my problem.

Of course, teachers see no point in that hour either. I believe it has something to do with getting state per pupil money for that day of attendance. I have never understood why one hour counted as a day of attendance any way.
Last year it was two hours, which was a little bit easier to manage.
In all the years I have been in D150, it has always been for 1 hour, usually 8:30-9:30.
I think all parents should boycott the day for their kids. It is irresponsible and a waste of our hard-earned tax dollars. Next year people send your District a message and KEEP THEM HOME! Never again will I jump through their silly hoops and bring my kids for one hour to pacify some bureacratic dumb ass.
It has always been annoying, but even more annoying this year is the fact that it started mid-morning - 10:00.
Give working parents some consideration.
Seriously? That is just crazy. It can't be worth the gas for the trip.
So Emerge - I know you were school shopping. Where is your child headed when school begin again in August?
Frustrated: I have never given specifics on where Little One goes to school and I never will. However, we have some good options and we are looking forward to next year.
What's the big deal? The teachers, staff and administrators get paid for a full day!
It's all about money. What does school have to do with kids and their families, anyway?
Why should they not get paid for being there all day? People act like a teacher is not "working" unless students are there. Meetings, cleaning, grading papers, and last minute appontments is what that day is for. That is all work in the private sector, so why should you complain about it in education?
Whose complaining? I think teachers should get paid 365 days a year from the moment they get their teaching certificate until they die...
the only difference between a tenured teacher in the classroom and a teacher who is retired or never had a teaching position is... uh... nothing.
kc, I agree with you to a certain point that the system is flawed. However, I do not feel that the only way to fix the problem is to replace public eduaction. There has got to be ways that intelligent people such as yourself, that has a passion for teaching can figure a way to teach all us tenured teachers to teach better. I would be willing to meet with you sometime this summer and discuss how we can improve how we do things in education.
