BOE unanimously approves Schau replacement

Will he get points for being a Brookhart recommendation? We have heard people complaining about retirees coming back to work in 150 as consultants; will he get slammed for being retired and coming to District 150? Will he be considered an "outsider"? And the most important question of all, can he hit the ground running?

The Peoria Public Schools Board of Education held a special meeting on Monday, August 16th to appoint an Interim District Comptroller/Treasurer. Board Members unanimously voted to name Dr. David Kinney to the post.

Kinney retired in June 2009 as Superintendent of Illinois Valley Central School District 321. During his 36-year tenure at IVC, he had extensive experience with school finance and curriculum planning; and was involved with several new building projects. He has both a Ph.D and Master's degree in Education Administration; and a Bachelor's degree in Music Education, which were all earned at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Dr. Lathan and the Board of Education appreciate the recommendation of Dr. Kinney by Dr. Gerald Brookhart at the Regional Office of Education. Source

Why should we slam him for getting $420 an hour (which Jim stated is less than a salaried person would be paid)? Why should we slam him for being retired? No one who isn't retired would accept a temporary job--and this appointment is temporary. There was no choice here--the district can survive without an associate superintendent or a department head for any length of time. However, a comptroller must be on duty within a very few days--by law. Why should we criticize him for being an outsider--he is from the Peoria area and is probably known by some District 150 people.
Will he do a good job for 120 days--who knows. We don't know what problems he faces and/or if Schau left problems we don't know about. My point is that I don't see any reason why conclusions can be drawn as to why Lathan's North Carolina appointments were criticized but this one is not. There is no comparison. Your comparison can come when the permanent (as permanent as 150 gets) comptroller is chosen.

And to think you had the following to say about a recent PJS article "In another piece that in my opinion, is written to incite rather than inform"

Looks to me like you are the one stirring the pot.

Stirring which pot, Anonymous?

Oh, and I do find it hard to accept that anyone in District 150 is worth $420 an hour or $3360 a day. However, that is the going rate (in the range) for those at the time.

It was reported on WEEK his pay was $450/day. That's a bit different than the $420/hour but it does add up to $54,000 for 120 days.

I know Dr. Kinney was a wonderful superintendent in Chillicothe and I think the next few days for him will be crazy. He has four days to come up with a budget for 150. I hope he does a great job and is able to pull it together for Peoria.

I also hope the BoE and Dr. Lathan are able to find a permanent replacement which will actually be with the district for an extended time. All this turnover can't be good for 150. I would like a few years of consistent employees, improved conditions in the schools, and increased test scores.

Oh, my, I should known better than to respond to anything about money off the top of my head. I guess in this case, it's my reading and listening skills that are debatable. $450 a day might be a bit more reasonable considering the heavy responsibility. Thanks, teachingrocks, for not being as hard on me as Jim will be when he reads this.

I am pretty sure Jim and I would respond differently to many situations. Being snarky isn't an automatic response for me. Jim, on the other hand.........

The Illinois Association of School Business Officers maintains a list of retired business officers who can step into comptroller/treasurer jobs for exactly the reason that Sharon points out -- there's a VERY limited number of days to hire. They specifically contemplate people like Dr. Kinney being hired for short periods so districts can do a GOOD search for a replacement instead of a frantic one, while still complying with the law and keeping the money stuff running. It would be very difficult, in this situation, to hire someone other than a retiree as an interim.

I also have heard nothing but good things about him from IVC folks. My old next-door neighbor (who literally moved yesterday) teaches at IVC and was jealous when she heard he was coming to 150, even as an interim.
