Peoria City Clerk Mary Haynes used her official city email address to forward a racially insensitive email to a Florida official.
The Costal Star, an online only community-based news organization, reported that a Highland Beach town clerk was suspended for sending “sexually oriented or defamatory” emails, one referring to President Obama with “the N-word.” This email particular did not involve Haynes, but the article states:
Another e-mail, about a “Texas girl’’ who shoots a Mexican and an Arab at a bar because her state has “so many illegal aliens,’’ was sent to [Town Clerk Beverly] Brown by Mary Haynes, city clerk of Peoria, Ill. Brown and Haynes won Quill awards from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, which certified them both as Master Clerks.
IIMC members sign a Code of Ethics promising that “the affairs of my office shall be above reproach’’ and “to so conduct my public and private life as to be an example to my fellow citizens.’’
In an email, reporter Steve Plunkett says that the email from MHaynes@ci.peoria.il.us account to Brown’s official bbrown@ci.highland-beach.fl.us account at 10:08 a.m. May 21. It was forwarded on by Brown three minutes later. It was sent to Haynes by sheila_spalding@hotmail.com, who Plunkett did not try to identify.
Haynes apologized for the incident:

Haynes apologized for the incident:
“I don’t recall the specific incident, but evidently at some point in time I did forward what seemed like a joke, but may have been offensive to some. As I said, I regret offending anyone and have taken measures to ask people sending private email to utilize my home email account.”

It would have been better had she asked people to stop sending her racist and sexist e-mails altogether.
OT: word floating around the West Bluff is that the fine arts school within a school at Central is going to get cut. IB may be getting expanded.
My thought... IB curriculum has room for a fine art component, perhaps this could be developed.
All good news Mahkno. Thanks for reporting.
Yes, there any many IB fine arts offerings. Those would be a good addition.
Also, the math and science components of Richwoods' IB program need to be beefed up. I think it has not been done because they offer a number of honors/AP courses in these areas, however, the current math/science offerings in the IB are so limited that a student interested in majoring in the sciences, engineering, or even business in college would seem to not have the right HL (high level) class choices as the IB currently stands.
Thanks for keeping us up to date on this situation.
That is good news Mahkno. Unfortunately, the Arts Program at Central is not half of what it should/could be.
Emerge - That is part of the beauty of the IB program. IB schools/programs are routinely audited by the IB organization to ensure they offer quality classes, otherwise a school will lose its certification. IB teachers must go through intensive training initially, as well as, continual training thereafter to maintain certification. Parents and the community are able to judge the quality of the IB program by looking at IB exam results (which are externally evaluated by trained IB examiners).
Also.... they are supposedly looking for a teacher or may be training one for HL Chemistry.
The international IB org also mandated that second year math go HL, so starting next years Richwoods IB math is HL (ie Calculus). This autumn there will be 4 HL choices. Not exactly choices as those are the only ones you can pick and well you get them all.
IB program would be better suited for a whole school conversion but I doubt we will see that.
More good news Mahkno. Not sure I understood everything you said though about additional options being added?
A student must take 3 HL classes and 3 SL classes to earn the IB. My daughter is in HL math and it is very difficult. The majority of the students at her school take SL Math because HL math it over kill unless the student is planning on technical major in college.
That is the idea beyond the IB -- offering a variety of different course selections enabling a student to select those courses which play to their strengths and interests.
Until next year, Richwoods does not have HL math. They currently have a 2 year SL program.
It's pretty sad that the Ms. Haynes is apologizing for using work email inappropriately but NOT for the racist content, which SHOULD be the bigger deal.
Oh, and the fact that someone would joke about SHOOTING someone based upon their immigration status is really sick.
If she is on an email list that received this - one can just imagine what other kind of off colored emails may be coming arcoss her desk.
