Flash mobs, not as cute as they used to be

I remember when I posted the item below (about two years ago). It was cute then, not so much now. I don't think the meet ups we are seeing today are "planned" per se. I just think a couple of people get a text about something about to go down and they continue to forward to their friends, before they know it - it's a whole crowd of people - a mob. A whole bunch of folks with nothing better to do. You know what they say, "The idle mind is the playground for the devil."

Has the flashmob phenomenon hit Peoria?

Sitting at Granny's listening to her scanner, I often hear about large crowds gathering all of sudden and fights breaking out. I sometimes think that these large crowds may be flashmobs. What is a flashmob? From Wikipedia:
A flash mob (or flashmob) is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse. The term flash mob is generally applied only to gatherings organized via social media or viral emails, rather than those organized by public relations firms or for a publicity stunt.

Organizing a "flash mob" basically involves e-mailing a bunch of people with instructions to show up at a certain place for a few moments, then disappear. Flashmobs are mainly used by guerrilla marketers.
If you think about it, the ability to organize flashmobs would also be effective for gang activity. Could this be what is happening in our fair City - flashmobs with "thug pants" instead of gold lame Hammer pants?

I can't stay away, can I? That's my major objection to cell phones in schools. We all know that drug deals go down at our schools--why wouldn't we believe that those are planned via cell phones?

After I retired at Manual the kids planned a very orderly walkout in favor of a teacher via cell phones(can't remember the circumstances). Interestingly enough, they weren't punished because no harm was done. However, some teachers thought that wasn't a very good precedent to set. It certainly pointed out how easily events can be planned.

Last night we learned that no students will be suspended for misuse of electronic devices, cell phones, etc., in District 150. No one mentioned what the consequences would be. That probably will cut down on cell phone usage. I think (not sure) that I heard that parents would have to come to school to retrieve confiscated phones. Now that might work. That consequence was promised when I was teaching but it never happened.

You did hear that parents would be called to retrieve confisciated cell phones. I believe it will be enforced this year.

CYA ya know... Children have rights too and ensuring that helps the District avoid lawsuits. Taxpayers really should be pleased that so much of what Dr. Lathan appears to be doing is based on what is required under the law.

Sharon, what the students do now is carry several cell phones. They give up one and keep on texting or chatting with the 2nd one. Some students carry as many as 4 extra phones. You would be surprised at how many phones weren't picked up last year. The kids are smart.Another thing they do is give up the phone, keep the battery and just put it into another phone of the same model Many fights last year were planned by way of texting. The students will tell you this. So it will continue this year and yes the schools will be very dangerous.

By the way Sharon...

I see you over on the other blog trying to keep it positive. Thanks, I appreciate that, but don't bother.

Some things I just refuse to dignify with a response, I certainly appreciate the efforts to "call me out", in most instances they are laughable.

Emerge, you don't deserve the comments over there--I can't let them go. I don't know why people can't just express opinions without personal attacks.

Gee, if you qualify for a free lunch, you get a free cell phone.
