A positive report about Trewyn School

From the EmergePeoria e-mail box...
"Trewyn seems to be really turning around this year. I don't know if it is due to Ms. Andrews, or Carl Cannon/Elite group, or all new teachers and the facelift the school has gotten, but there is definitely a different feel this year, the kids are behaving much better so far, and the teachers seem to be really invested as well.

We had an evacuation drill recently and I couldn't believe how well it went. Kids were in straight lines walking in an orderly quiet "elite style" manner, all the way to Harrison and back. They went into the gym at Harrison and all sat down in an orderly fashion (I didn't go in to the gym, so I can't say for sure) but I can tell you that when they were leaving the gym, still in that orderly fashion with the older kids holding the hands of the younger kids, still in straight lines, I almost cried, I couldn't believe it. That would never have happened last year.

I told every kid that I came into contact with that day how proud I was of them and actually had a 7th grader, who is a member of the elite leadership team tell me, "It's because this year the teachers care about us.".

I think they cared last year to be honest, at least most of them, but the teachers didn't have the support this team has either. The same student told me that boot camp made the difference and said " we need it again, because kids are getting bad again"."
They will be having it again, Phase 2 was set to start that week, with assemblies.

I am glad to hear something good is happening in our schools. If it can happen there, maybe it can happen at others in 150 too. There are other schools which really need a turn around too. Thank you for the positive report, Emerge.

Wow, the kids did an evacuation drill. What progress. Did you know that Lathan has ordered Principles at all schools to no longer issue failing grades and unless a student actually stabs and or shoots someone, no more suspensions??
I can't wait to see what strides are made in the near future, like getting off the public dole with Title one and passing minimum state standards.

Emtronics, please give me so proof that Lathan made these statement--when and where and to whom did she make such statements.

Remember that Lathan is the person who, in March, lashed out at Dr. Kherat and asked her to explain inflated grades at Manual. Yes, I, also, have commented at BOE meetings and everywhere else about MHS's inflated grades. However, if Lathan chose to do the unethical (scold one of her principals in public) while at the same time knowing that she herself adheres to the same philosophy--they she is deceiving us.

Has anyone heard of a female school resource officer and a teacher's aide being hurt when trying to break up a fight at Manual on Friday? Didn't know if this was rumor or fact.

it's a fact, but it was on thursday.... more fights (that's right, fights with an "s")today.

I wonder if the teacher's aide (and the security guard) reported the incident to the police.

The fighting is out of control at Manual and at Peoria High. The schools are more of a joke than ever if you think large groups of blacks fighting and disrupting school everyday is funny. I don't. So, to fix the problem, let's blame everybody and everything else for these poor misguided youths problems. Certainly let's not punish any child for any reason. After all, we should all respect these kids and someday they may respect the system back. What a crock.
Sharon, I'll answer your email this morning.

Emtronics, it wasn't the fact that they HAD an evacuation drill, it was how the behavior change was so different from previous drills. I believe that was the point of the post.

How about putting a majority of the blame where it belongs. Grenita.
She took it upon herself to come in and screw up this system in every way possible. Two schools filled with children that cannot get along outside of school. What you think they’re going to do in?
The 'kids' as we keep referring them to are young adults who for we hope for the most part will be leaving in 2 to 3 years to go away to college or become productive in our society. At some point they have to be held accountable for their actions whether they are happy or not. There are other ways of taking out their frustrations’ and they should be mature enough at this time in their age where they start being held more accountable for their actions.

Anyone know something about Trewynn being put on Stage 2 discipline due to behavior problems?

Sharon Crews said...

This sounds like what Terry talked about at the BOE meeting. Do you have any idea how much teachers would be criticized by punishing everyone for what a few students do? So why would a whole school be put on Stage 2--talk about encouraging everyone to be bad--what do they have to lose?

Anon: Do you listen to yourself? OK Congrates on the fact that it has come to the point that they can evacuate a school and the kids behave. I guess small steps.
BTW, they had a full blown fight at Manual yesterday while letting the children out for PE. Fights broke out on the track, in public view. The Campus police didn't call backup but the Admin did put out a call for all admins at other schools to come to Manual. They didn't want this public. When they got the kids back inside, two more fights broke out. It was a hell of a day at Manual.

Perhaps Trewyn is doing better because their class sizes are appropriate. Whereas, Harrison is bursting at the seams. Over 70 students in one PE class with just 2 teachers. A first grader was injured and needed surgery but everyone blames the mother for being overly dramatic. An extra kindergarten class was added but each class still has close to 30 students. Teachers are not able to teach because they have to do crowd control.

Yes Trewyn is doing better which is awesome!
Yes some schools are over populated which makes it harder to teach. This is something that does need to be addressed. We need to do what is right so all teachers are able to teach. Isn't the goal to help all children achieve! Class size is a good place to start!
