"On the HR Report from the last district board meeting there appears to be 3 new positions created and I believe at least 2 out of the 3 new hires are from NC and/or have connection to Guilford County. One is a former student in Guilford County school district. New positions: Professional Development Coordinator, Human Resource Specialist, and Asst. Principal at Woodruff. No one in Peoria qualified for these jobs?"
"So the Wacky Wednesdays are back...half-days for kids and all staff was due in some other building, for professional development. Very poorly managed. You can bet the kids will be not at their best tomorrow, after having a half-day off during the week. SIP days need to go back to Friday. It makes more sense to the students that it is the last day of the week. It makes more sense for everybody. Wacky, wacky, wacky...that's D150 these days!"
"The other thing is these meetings with the union president Bob Darling. You really think teachers are going to talk openly in front of Darling when they know he is 'in bed' with Lathan and crew. Darling is an administrator pure and simple. Don't know many teachers who leave their homes after 8:30 am and are home in the middle of the day. Just some food for thought....."

Emerge, you are 1000% correct. They do need to make these meetings on Friday afternoons. I had 6 students out today. The "powers that be" thought that the reason so many students didn't come to school when we had inservice on Friday afternoons was because they were getting an early "jump" on the weekend. No so. The fact is, Momma don't wanna get out of bed to get all her babies ready for school for "only" 3 hours, besides, it was cold and rainy....no reason to get up!
We are giving our questions to our building rep and having him give them to Bobbie. He can read them aloud and answer them. That way, no one gets targeted, be it by Bobbie (the pseudo-administrator) or by a "spy" in the audience. lol
Wow...that says a lot about the strength of the union and the integrity of it's leadership if teachers have to go to those lengths to voice their opinions and even get answers to their questions. Are they that afraid of retaliation by Lathan and her crew?
Given the abundance of other opportunities these, ahem, professional educators, ahem should have - I say if you're not on board in D150, find another ship for the good of everyone that the district is trying to serve. Continually blaming admin, babies mommas, and everyone but the person in the mirror ain't helpn.
Take a walk in the shoes of any of Peoria's finest teachers for a week...and keep in mind there are people out there who are clueless (ahem)...then decide not suspending is a good thing for the district. Then decide that allowing teachers, "resource officers" and any other adults can be hit just because the student was handed an assignment, or told no. And...then...when another student is hurt by that kid...you tell the parents that their child was responsible, and see what happens.
Natural consequences work...
Wacky Wednesdays are back.....they never went away. All they did was make it every few Wednesdays instead of every one. The SIP days are a basic waste of time. It sounds good that the teachers are receiving PD. Most of the time it is some sort of meeting where another teacher from the building is "teaching" them about something "new" like the thinking maps.
"are" in the above comment should be "aren't"
To the Anonymous who recommended that 150 teachers find another ship--do you mean other than the Titanic? :)
Sharon, there must be more Carolinans who need Peoria jobs...but we ain't goin' nowhere! I didn't mean to mimic how a N. Carolinan speaks there, sorry.
Today I had a rather "heated" discussion with a co-worker about Trewyn Middle School. I am not trying to support or spread rumors, but would like some clarification about the things my co-worker brought up. My co-worker stated the following:
1. This is the first year that Trewyn will be using Accelerated Reader. They have never had it before?
2. Carl Cannon and his ELITE group remodeled the school by taking out old tile, painting, etc. The District did none of the work.
3. Trewyn students mow lawns of the homes around the school as part of their respect training.
4. Carl Cannon acquired uniforms for all students and gave each child a uniform.
5. All of the students are sectioned off by grade. I have heard differently, I heard that there are 1st grade classrooms next to 8th grade classrooms, etc.
I'm not trying to start rumors but some of the points my co-worker was trying to make I had trouble believing. My co-worker tried to make it seem like Carl is God and he is running the school and Renee Andrews is doing nothing. Clarification would be great from anyone.
1. Trewyn has ALWAYS had Accelerated Reader.
2. The new tiles and painting were done...those who asked were told by Carl Cannon's people...not district employees. Rumor: a grievance was filed.
And I don't blame their union for filing a grievance. What if Carl Cannon decided to bring in his friends and start teaching? I think NOT!
This administration is in the business of breaking as many unions as possible. I know there are those who will cheer that goal because they don't have unions to protect themselves. At some point all workers will realize that they need protection.
Emerge there is a "town hall" meeting, for lack of a better term, that is being held at Washington Gifted tonight a 6:00. Dr. Lathan will be there to discuss District initiatives and answer questions.
Are you planning on attending?
I kinda figured that Trewyn already had Accelerated Reader. What school in America doesn't use AR..lol.
I'm glad maintenance is filing a grievance, if the work needed to be done to the building they should be the ones to do the work.
Anyone know exactly what Carl's role is? Does he have administrative powers? What does he do besides hold assemblies and have kids chant stuff? Is behavior better at Trewyn?
People are always saying "why doesn't someone do something about 150 schools" Well, Carl Cannon is doing something. If God, himself walked through the door, people would find something to complain about. Give me a break - what are you doing?
"Is behavior better at Trewyn?"
YES
Actually, non-union,-non district employees, did the work at the Charter school. That was an opening. They also have non-union, non-district custodians there too.
Charter Schools are required by law to have a large percentage of certified teachers but they do not have to be unionized. Of course, that is, also, a goal of charter schools and Glen Barton (Caterpillar) to break unions. I don't know how it will all end.
Did Dr. Lathan's daughter get into Washington Gifted or is she at Mark Bills?
Unions that constantly protect poor performers and social welfare programs that incentivize sloth and apathy are ruining a once great nation. Those who defend unions at all costs should move to Libya, I hear a new nation of all equals is forming. Right to work doesn't entail lifetime employment (tenure) unless you show continued positive results. Teachers blame parents (or admin) and parents blame teachers (or admin) and yet teachers and a majority of D150 parents are sucking the rest of the taxpayers dry. Change is needed - even more than what we are getting. The system is broke and all those on taxpayer payrolls want is more....more....more....
Those who have not benefitted from unions in this country are few and far between as you will see once the last union falls prey to the likes of the Anonymous above. This "once" great nation was built on the backs of those who were forced to work long hours with little pay. Then they rose up and made things better for so many--some of whom were probably Anonymous' not so distant relatives. That some have taken advantage of the situation is, of course, the way of human nature. But there are many who are not slothful or apathetic. The teachers at Quest who are not unionized could probably tell you how things work when there is no union protection.
And Jimmy Hoffa was a just and righteous leader who protected worker interests above all others. Some people just don't have a clue......unions prey on the ignorance and blind faith of their members. Case in point above.
Mark Bills with waivers for all her lil friends.
Dr. Grenita Hoffa
As I've said before, during most of my career I was anti-union (during much of my career Peoria teachers didn't even have a union). I didn't actually join the union until the PFT gained bargaining rights and we all were required to pay dues. I didn't see the point of a union until very late in my career at Manual when we went from a 7-hour to a 6-hour day. A friend of mine was treated very unfairly during this process. Then I saw the need for a union. In fact, as a result of her unfair transfer, the union did negotiate a fairer policy for transfers. So with all due respect, ignorance and blind faith didn't play a role in my seeing the need for a union--it was a matter of a friend being treated unfairly.
The truth of the matter is that I still have major reservations about the teachers' union at the national level--however, for a local union to exist or have any power, there has to be a national union. It is true that either management or unions can wield too much power if the balance is skewed. Unions need to exist to achieve some sort of balance.
P.S., Anonymous, can you think of any corrupt CEOs or managers--unions have their share, but so does the other side.
Made my point again Sharon - it's not about "sides" - it SHOULD be about doing the right thing. The right thing is for parents to raise children responsibly, not as an avenue for gov't entitlements. The right thing is for leaders to lead by example - and not intimidation, the right thing is for teachers to be professionals and care about their children (most do, by the way) and not use Dist 150 as only a paycheck while retreating to their bedroom community. To correct decades of wrongs ALL need to be on the right side - together. Not challenging the status quo on entitlements is just one example of how you continue to choose "sides" - and it ain't helpn!
You people slay me with all this hero worship for Carl Cannon. A friggin 300 lb, muscle bound, ex-prison guard who goes into schools to intimidate little kids to stand on a line and keep their mouths shut and then threathen to show up the next day to get in their face again. Bully.
So Anonymous who wants us all to be on the same side--on which side are you? I assume you live in the heart of the inner city and not in a bedroom community. I assume you dislike teachers in general for whatever reason. I certainly keep asking the same question: I assume you are still discussing entitlements for parents who do not take responsibility for their children, so just how do you expect teachers to use their influence to make parents responsible. Teachers are powerless in that arena. The administrators make the rules--or break them or do not enforce them--so teachers are at their mercy.
District Watch will meet Sunday at 6 p.m. at Monical's (Lake and Knoxville). Any and all are very welcome. Note that the board meeting on Monday will be in the Lindbergh library. On the agenda will be the acceptance of a settlement with the Trewyn teachers. Yet another lost lawsuit for District 150.
Along those lines, I've heard that Mary Davis is getting yet another lawyer and a further continuance.
Sharon, where did you get your information about Davis and what is the settlement for Trewyn teachers?
Information on Mary davis can be easily obtained from Peoria county courthouse. It is public information.
Thank you 'marydavisNot'
Yay!!!!! for Trewyn teachers!!!! Go Benassi!!!!
paying off a district drunk and some less than stellar co-workers - yep - the union ought to be real proud of them.
one of those teachers is so nasty I hear local bars have s Servicemaster pro follow her into bathrooms so they can be sterilized before the general public has to use them again.
Wow. You want to discount unions by saying they're destroying the backbreaking labor that made America great. What? Go back to the wholesale slaughter of Native Americans and 400 years of slavery? Maybe we should go back to the pre-child labor law era and have ten-year-olds sweeping chimneys and dying of black lung before they're fourteen.
Or would you prefer that our jobs be outsourced to countries where children work eighteen hours a day for a dollar? Go explain to them why they shouldn't stand up for themselves and unionize.
If we didn't have unions in 150, by now our whole workforce would be replaced by North Carolinians.
So, do you think recent events will be enough to get LaToy to take down her Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi poster? Damn thing creeps me out every time I enter her office. That and the Hello Kitty throw pillows.
Internet learning sites with modest supervision could produce better test scores than a lot of D150 teachers. If you are gonna receive better incomes and benefits than the vast majority of parents whose children you serve - at least work year 'round. countdown to the whining in 1,2,3..
Anonymous--please provide some data. There are students who take courses on the internet via 150's Credit Recovery courses. Why not check to see if their standardized (NCLB, etc.) test scores are higher than the scores in teacher-taught classes.
Do you demand that your doctors receive incomes not exceeding the salaries of those whom they serve? I don't know that that kind of pay scale even works for pastors with regard to the average income of those in their congregation.
Would you, also, contend that the salaries of the superintendent and all her "cabinet" should, also, be paid according to the income level of the parents of District 150 students?
Anonymous probably received his associate's degree online shortly after divorcing his mail order bride.
Sharon, and last Anonymous, NC must do things that way...
Has anyone seen latoy's door to her office? There is so much racist in your face slogans that its hard to notice the hello kitty pillows.
Like what?
Like what?
Whoever wrote the comment about the "drunk", that was incredibly hateful.
I meant to comment on the comment referred to by the last Anonymous. I know only one of the teachers who was part of the Trewyn lawsuit--she does not fit any of the descriptions offered by the "incredibly hateful" blogger. If the earlier anonymous is going to attack people personally, it would be good if you could stand behind your comments with a name so that you can be held accountable for your accusations.
carl cannon and his "friends" huge mistake at trewyn. been there, not impressed.
