Bodyguard Houston is dead. I knew Whitney when she was the ONLY black model who was in Seventeen Magazine. Seeing her face in Seventeen, made all the difference for me as a little black girl, who didn't' see people who looked like me in magazines or on TV. For a long time I didn't respect her as a singer.
My daughter knew Houston through her movies and loved the movie "Bodyguard" with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. She called Whitney, "Bodyguard Houston" for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately Whitney didn't have a bodyguard tonight and now she is dead. Rest in peace Whitney, you have been tired for a long time. RIP.

As a person who has followed Houston's career since she was a fresh faced teenager in Seventeen Magazine, in my opinion, the beginning of her downward spiral was when she met Clive Davis; and as far as I know, Bobby Brown was nowhere around at that time.
How Will I Know
"How Will I Know" is a song recorded by American recording artist Whitney Houston for her debut album, entitled Whitney Houston, which was released in February 1985. It was released by Arista Records in November that year, as the album's third single. Composed by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, the song was originally intended for Janet Jackson, but she passed on it. Houston then recorded the song with altered lyrics and production from Narada Michael Walden. An up-tempo dance song, the lyrics speak about the protagonist trying to decide if a boy she likes will ever like her back.

The song's music video features scenes of Houston dancing in a strikingly designed setting of video screens and colored partitions. The music video gave Houston exposure to the teens and MTV, a feat which the black artists had traditionally found tough to achieve. It also received nominations at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards in the categories of Best Female Video and Best New Artist in a Video, winning the former category. The song has been performed on many of her tours including Greatest Love Tour (1986) and her recent Nothing but Love World Tour (2009–10). "How Will I Know" is also featured as a remix on Houston's compilation album, Whitney: The Greatest Hits (2000), whereas the original version is featured on The Ultimate Collection (2007). Source

I agree. What a beautiful voice with a troubled soul. Sometimes money doesn't buy us happiness. Rest in Peace, Whitney, from a big fan.
I still don't see people who look like me in any magazines.
That's a good thing.
I LOVED that album. I always held out hope that Whitney'd turn it around...and I do blame Bobbie Brown.
She sang the best National Anthem ever at the Super Bowl as our country was going to war in the Middle East. That is one of the best videos out there...and she was so happy singing it.
We should remember she was somebody's Mother and daughter.
Thank you, Whitney.
Whitney and her music were obviously inspirations to many. I have enjoyed reading Emerge's comments and the comments of several of my friends and my former students on Facebook, who are remembering all the ways that Whitney and her music affected their lives.
Modern-day media has brought us closer than ever to the public persona of our entertainers, politicians, etc. However, we have to remember that these people are all more than their public persona; they are real human beings.
And Emtronics, you made me laugh.
Yes Whitney was someone's child and a mother and yes it is sad to read about your death, which was most likely brought on by her lifestyle. People will post memorials all over the place about this but where is the concern, the anguish, the sadness for ordinary people, like our soldiers who die everyday defending us? The only time they make news if it's a local kid. Otherwise nothing.
While sad, this is a non news event IMO.
Emtronics, it has ever been so with celebrities--but please don't discount the fact that their music, etc., does have an impact on the lives of ordinary people. The great thing about Facebook, blogs, etc., is that we can honor anyone whom we choose to honor, including those whom you have mentioned. I disagree that the death of celebrities is a non news event. Remember, "no man is an island; no man stands alone...each man's death diminishes me." (Not an exact quote but close).
Thanks for your opinion. That's what blogging is about. Now let me tell you mine. We all fall to the way-side at times. Sometimes we are lucky and blessed enough that through the grace of GOD, HE as well others gives enough to stand by us and see us through. Those of us who has been through this or have loved ones, friends, co-workers and just ordinary folk in in our lives (and I would like to think that pretty much covers all of us) who have, knows just how hard it is and how difficult that person can be.
IMO you do not judge a persons tragedy or quality of their lives by how much money, fame, and friends they have nor what type of job they have. You base it on the love they have for others, in their heart and their soul. I have no clue what you have or not been reading but obviously you are not using the internet much. You do not have to go no farther than your homepage web browser to see news on the tragic happenings with our fellow american soldiers fighting and dying any where in the world. To insinuate that we do not care, mourn or write nor read about it is a insult to every blogger on this site. IMO.
She was missed the minute she hooked up with Bobby Brown. So sad her life took the path of drugs. I pray her daughter learns from this horrible tragedy. Photos of her snorting a white substance have already shown up on the web. Whitney's voice was Godsent but she played with the devil and lost.
One big problem with the Internet and the software available, is the ability to tamper with photos and even video clips to make something look fake; including transposing someone's face/head on someone else's body.
