Deb. Your mantra is "change is hard." And "we have to get out of our comfort zone." Well, change starts at home. How about bringing your wardrobe forward a couple of centuries.

Any one of the administrators being demoted is worth ten Grenita Pas.

Really ??? Just 10???
Too bad we can't tar and feather carpetbaggers like they did in the past!!!

Weren't Petelle and Cloyd part of the District Watch talent pool? Why don't they do what is expected?

Anonymous said...

Cloyd was a Boar's Nest extra on Dukes of Hazzard before coming to Peoria. Petelle was rescued from an eyebrow growing cult in the Ozark Mountains.

Sharon Crews said...

Petelle and Cloyd were never part of Distict Watch. The reason both came to meetings (the same as they went to meetings of other groups) was to gain support and votes. We have no membership list--period. However, we do have an e-mail site to which any who ask to be included have access. Laura does have access because she asked for it when she was running for office. Therefore, she is in on anything we post on the site--which doesn't amount to much.

Sharon Crews said...

What is the fine print in the strategic plan that states that the way Lathan has judged and treated administrators is progress for the District?
I especially want to know how it is part of a strategic plan for Lathan personally (with no input from anyone else, I believe) to reposition so many administrators at the beginning of the year--because she knew they were more right for the jobs than were those who held the jobs last year. And then six months later to decide that she made the wrong decisions. How Petelle, Wolfmeyer, and Cloyd can call this a plan of any kind is beyond me.
By what criteria of the strategic plan, are these people being judged. If it's by low test scores or by student discipline, then almost all District 150 principals would be fired as would any of those who take their place.
I'm beginning to believe the contention of someone on this blog who stated that if the principals aren't mean enough to their staff, they are deemed unfit for the job.
I am especially surprised that Dr. Pierce, whose wife was a good friend of Sharon Kherat's, would believe that Dr. Lathan's judgments are fair and for the good of the District. I am pleased that the audience tonight saw fit to show him how they felt about his comments.

Anonymous said...

Ridiculous. This board refuses to manage the superintendent. She is a run away train.

Anonymous said...

the only way Pastor Pierce is speaking on behalf of Lathan is if he is getting something out of it. i am willing to bet he is getting grant money for some type of program.

Anonymous said...

I would love to see the Great Grenita place either John Wetteraur or Ken Turner at Glen Oak. If they are so wonderful and have proven skills based on high test scores, they would be perfect to turn Glen Oak around! Sadly, we all know that Glen Oak is VERY different from Charter Oak or Keller and the ability of either of these two to be successful at Glen Oak is slim. Sadly the Great Grenita wouldn't know a good principal if she ran into one. Also, how much support did she provide these principals?

Anonymous said...

FYI The Great Grenita has tried to sell the whole principal demotion deal as the state's new evaluation process. Funny, PERA, the law enacting this new system does not go into effect until FY13 (July 1, 2012). In fact the CEC was hired to write sample evaluation tools and has not released them yet! The Great Grenita would like everyone to think her hands were tied...how many times will the Board just "take their medicine" without doing just a little research? Silly silly board members, go to isbe.net and review the PERA article in this week's superintendent's update for the FACTS!

Anonymous said...

Time to make public the strategic plan that is being followed. The taxpayer is demanding that, so we can figure out for ourselves why these upstanding principals needed to be demoted.

Anonymous said...

Should someone check with Lisa Madigan's office? Pretty sure no business action can take place at a Committee of the Whole meeting even if they post it on the agenda. By virtue of the name, Committee of the Whole, it is only a committee meeting and NO action can be taken. If they want to take action, they could have scheduled a special meeting either before or after the Committee of the Whole to take specific action. Keep in mind the Great Grenita believes she can do whatever she wants, whenever she wants. She believes she is above the law! Thank God we have a board that will hold her accountable, not!

Anonymous said...

Committee of whole cannot vote unless there is a special called.

But, following rules and procedures is neither a strong suit of the board or Lathan.

Perhaps this will all come into play with the inevitable lawsuits.

Anonymous said...

Kmart Deb needs to do a little research instead of taking everything Grenate says for fact. Embarrassed to say I work for this district right now....and I thought Hinton was a putz...

Anonymous said...

When do these reclassifications take place? I just can't believe this!

Anonymous said...

Too bad none of the other principals have the courage to speak up for these individuals. It could be one of them next on the chopping block.

Anonymous said...

We need Alicia Butler back on the board. At least everyone knows she's a pathological liar. These folks are more sly.

Anonymous said...

Renee Andrews and her side kick, Jabba the Hut, were part of the lynch mob. They wouldn't have the guts show their faces. Renee doesn't hesitate to raid Garfield teachers or Whittier teachers, with the support of her Queen, Lathan.

Anonymous said...

These board members are being led to slaughter by the almighty, crooked wig wearing Grenita. All hail her dishonest, corrupt majesty. Really? Wake up. If you live in Peoria demand better than these people. If you don't have children demand better for your friends and neighbors children! Demand her resignation and that of every board member. She is a bully and lacks the talent and personality to run a district. What an embarrassment.

Tia said...

Who is Jabba the Hut? How was Renee Andrews part of the lynch mob? Just asking out of curiosity.

Anonymous said...

Wake up people!!! This woman is a detriment to our entire city!
I have worked with two of the so-called ineffective principals and I would like to say that Kevin Curtin was EXCELLENT as principal at Garfield. The climate of that school was positive when he was principal. On the other hand, it is so sad to think that Dr. Lathan would deem certain administrators ineffective and then 'demote' them by sending them to the classroom where our precious students are...isn't their success and well-being paramount???? This makes NO sense.
Why is Chris Crawford missing this meeting? It is an especially important one and why are board members following Dr. Lathan like sheep when so many at the grass roots are seeing red flags?

Anonymous said...

Anyone collecting money to fund the wrongful demotion suits that I HOPE are going to be filed? Wow...just wow...

Anonymous said...

How did Knapp teach us to look up Benassi's number? Oh, go to the yellow pages and look under "When District 150 screws you over, call us!" We always win!

Dennis in Peoria said...

I videoed the NAACP press Conference, hope to have it uploaded Tuesday as a CAPtions Web Extra. It included comments by community members who supported Dr. Lathan when she 1st started. According to them, what has happened with these principals is a tragedy for the schools. A couple of teachers also spoke. But I was not able to stay and record the Board meeting.

Anonymous said...

What happened with Paul Monrad?

Anonymous said...

Hey...let's get Cindy Clark into the mix at BOE meetings! Her brilliance may well overshadow all the others. At least Ptacek didn't turn RHS into a total laughing stock. Way to go Ms. Clark! You 'da man!!! Too bad the superintendent didn't choose a principal for RHS based on merit rather than friendship (or butt kissing)...of course Clark learned from the best...Simmons. She was a failure at Notre Dame, a failure at PHS and now she's astounding the masses at RHS. At least she's consistent.

Anonymous said...

Sharon has said repeatedly that adminstrators have lost touch with what goes on in the classroom. Maybe that's the case here. Unless those that were involved go public with the reasoning, nobody knows. Why don't they make a public statement? Surely it has nothing to do with the reasons being valid. Lawsuits pending?

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

Costic and Ross not supporting Grenita? The NCAAP protesting over some of her decisions? I predict this is the beginning of the end for the Great Grenita. The power hungry diva will be packing her bags soon. Keep the pressure on folks and good things will follow!

BTW- Is it true other principals received unsatisfactory evaluations? Are they being demoted?

Anonymous said...

Grenita has a three year contract. She is in her second year now. Think the BOE should buy her out for the third year and send her on her way. Maybe Ross and/or Costic can propose this!

Sharon Crews said...

I don't think that Lathan's reason can be that these administrators have lost touch with the classroom, since their teachers are backing them. Lathan does not seem likely to demote any principals because of teacher complaints.
Also, using test scores or discipline as a reason should not be acceptable since most District 150 schools are having the same problems. I cannot fathom any reasons that would require taking action right now--except to make examples of the principals. Yes, I have heard others are getting bad evaluations. How can she blame principals when she played fruit basketupset to take everyone out of comfort zones and then giving them only 6 months to adapt--if there is any such thing in District 150. When does she get blamed for poor judgment if her own choices don't work out (at least by whatever measuring stick she is using)--starting with Ungurait.

Anonymous said...

According to Illinois School Code "No official business shall be transacted by the directors except at a regular or a special meeting." This was a Committee of the Whole meeting right? It was not a regular or special meeting. How can action be taken? Somebody please help me understand this?

Anonymous said...

Think you may be on to something. Vote might not be valid.

Anonymous said...

Where is Jon when you need him?

Anonymous said...

It is very unfortunate when individuals spend a lifetime in a profession and all of a sudden they have been deemed "ineffective". I truly feel for those administrators who were demoted. I am sure their self-esteem is at an all time low.

Just remember there were many great people who were fired, demoted, considered not good enough ---- They picked themselves up, held their head high, walked through the fire, and moved on to better things.

Never stay in a place where your hard work is not appreciated.

Anonymous said...

Never stay in a place where your hard work is not appreciated!!

Anonymous said...

Help me out with this...so Kevin is demoted b/c of external measurements besides Grenita's opinion? B/c she JUST transferred him to a school this last fall. There are NO test results for her to base this upon.

Anonymous said...

Dennis- How can I view the NAACP press confernce? Thanks for covering that for all of us.

Anonymous said...

It is obvious she doesn't have to provide valid information in order for some on the board to back her. It also seems she is floating along with ZERO accountability when that is her buzz word for getting rid of people. This whole situation continues to be ridiculous and I can't believe this board continues to astound me with their idiotic decisions.

Anonymous said...

BOE's tired lines..

"It's all about the children."

To Deb Wolfmeyer-
She is doing the job that the BOE hired her to do???????

Is that job to divide the whole community?

Anonymous said...

Get rid of Deb Wolfmeyer. She was a horrible secretary, never saw such an messy desk! The people who voted for her should be ashamed. Being on the board gives her a sense of power, something she has never had at work or HOME. That makes her a dangerous person. Don't forget she is the one that allowed Hinton to do whatever he wanted and hire all the dumb a##%S he wanted to.

Anonymous said...

Lathan is a bully; Ironic that the bullier will not allow anyone to bully back. She can't handle it so she strikes back just like a snake. Oh did I say snake? Snake Lathan Lathan Snake nice ring they go together like two peas in a pod. Wish the snake would go home and take all of her like snakes with her! Go Home Carpetbagger!

Anonymous said...

Lets face it, not that many people applied for Lathan's job. That's why we got her, no quality candidates to choose from. Change is good, bullying is not. Shame shame on Lathan and the board. Where does Timmy Delinski fit in with all of this? Has he been in any closets lately? Great role model for kids. NOT!

Anonymous said...

Didn't Sharon Kherat and Ptacek apply for the position, why weren't they chosen for the job? Weren't there several others? Don't you think that is why Lathan bullied them until they quit? I know he had another position, but Kherat applied for several too, does anyone really believe that either one of them wanted to leave the District?

Sharon Crews said...

I hate it that the business world's adversarial model of boss-employee relations has entered education. Of course, it always existed to a certain extent because humanbeings seems to have a natural desire for power over others. However, Dr. Lathan seems to be the worst I've seen with this desire for power over employees--and that such power is a productive way to run an educational institution.
For anyone who knows about the Broad institute that is training superintendents--is this the model that is taught?
I started teaching with a principal who had a great relationship with his teachers--almost like a father to many of us. I prefer that model. And I believe kids did much better being exposed to that environment because we teachers, in turn, followed that model in relationship to our students. I believe it is a principle of human nature that we treat others the way we are treated.
I honestly believe it is a great idea for us to like or love our bosses--Dr. Lathan obviously doesn't hold out any such hope or maybe desire.

Anonymous said...

God help our students that are being educated by all you knuckleheads. Oh, thats right, according to their test scores, you ain't learn'm nothin. Maybe they will grow up to be bitter, vindictive leeches that suck taxpayers $$ - then you can call'm successful like you.

Anonymous said...

Bitter and vindictive--like a board member who didn't get his/her way or someone who lost an election? Anon--get some coping skills! There are educated counselors who can help you. Like the Kitty asked the paralyzed man at the ,"Do you want to get well?"

Anonymous said...

Change is hard. Hahahahahaha. That is the most ridiculous thing in the world to say. The implication is that the change they are promoting is inherently good and that if you don't agree with it it's because you can't accept "change" not that you can't accept their dumbass decisions. You have to be so fricking stupid to continuously say "change is hard." Even more pathetic are the board members who keep saying that personnel matters are confidential and that out of respect for the people being demoted they aren't going to discuss what may or may not be in those files. They imply that the people being demoted have done something wrong (that can't be discussed) while claiming they respect their privacy. Man the hell up. If you're going to make the decision to demote someone, take the heat. Don't try to pawn it off on the person being demoted.

Who would aspire to be over there?

Anonymous said...

Lathan and her "bots" are doing the walk through at Glen Oak today. Why bother?? She has already said what she thinks about our school. After a brief walk through a few weeks ago, she deemed all teachers unsatisfactory. She has also thrown our principal to the wolves because she dared to apply out of the district. Our children, some of the ones she claims to care so much about, aren't worthy of any consistency in their school life. Chaos and upheaval, the things those students are dealing with at home, have come once again to their school.

Oh yeah, she certainly is all about the children. NOT!

Anonymous said...

At least she will get a real walk through, unlike our school where the principal only picked certain places for them to go to and for them to see. So that they didn't get the real picture. Of course, the principal is one of her favorites so her visit was just for show. Oh yeh, we even had catered meal for Lathan when she came to our school.

Anonymous said...

Bloggers,
I appreciate all your comments, but let's stop arguing. Correct me if I am wrong: all of us want Lathan and the board out because they are ruining our children's education. Let's make an effort and concetrate on determinig how we are going to achieve this. We can't wait until election day to vote out board members one by one. We can't wait until Lathan contract is over because by then many lifes would be ruined and she would transfer all her funds back to NC. WE HAVE TO DO IT NOW! Community leaders, Unions, parents, teachers, support personnel, whites, blacks, hispanics, Arabs, all together, have the Civil Right to decide when elected officers are not fit for the job. But we have to act now and act together. Let's do not get distracted. If the community as a whole ask the board and Lathan to resign their positions they will feel the heat and they will have to do it. Volunteers to organized this?
Please put your words into action!

Anonymous said...

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can someone get a time and place to organize?

How about you send Emerge your name and meeting information and ask her to post it?

I may have just posted this, not sure if a pushed button. Valda Shipp was at the meeting, I thought as a part of the protest. Her lawsuit is still pending, so I doubt that she would be called back to 150 unless she won the suit--and that would make the PJS. Strange things have happened, but that would be truly strange.

http://educationinalabama.com/2012/03/peoria-public-schools-partners-with-houghton-mifflin-harcourt-to-spur-21st-century-transformation/

This press release is so far from the truth. All of these wonderful things happening in Peoria? Did the board bid this project? How much was spent on it total?

Sharon Crews said...

This is the deal with Houghton-Mifflin-Harcourt about which I had sought FOIA data (because of the huge amount of money spent on textbooks that were not put out for bid and a decision made by Lathan and her group with no input from teachers, etc.--which is not way textbooks purchases are supposed to be conducted).
150 wanted so much to keep it a secret that they contacted the Attorney-General when they knew I was seeking the information--in order to get pre-approval to keep the preliminary dealings for the deal secret.

Anonymous said...

So, is there actually a management system in place called pinpoint in Peoria if the money did/did not go to textbooks?

Anonymous said...

To Anonymous regarding pierce comment....that was Dr. Pierce's pastor/husband. So sad a man who says he's called by God would support taking from hard working men and women dedicated to doing the best job they can for children of this City.
What would Jesus do? WWJD
Here's a question...Where are we going to find new administrators capable of taking positions where you only have 6 mos to a year to improve the school? Any takers???

After some trials and errors, I successfully uploaded the NAACP Press Conference from Monday before the BOE Committee of the Whole meeting. Here is the link:

Sharon Crews said...

Almost 2 million dollars was spent on textbooks, mostly from Houghton-Mifflin-Harcourt--I have FOIA'd invoices that show those expenditures. I had heard that 150 had bought a program called Pinpoint and I haven't FOIA'd that data yet. Now I am wondering about its connection to Houghton. A major deal appears to have been made between 150 and this company. A representative of this company did part of the audit for 150 for free--I believe in return for this deal, but that was the information that 150 refused to give out.

Anonymous said...

I have no opinion of Valda Shipp one way or the other. I was happy to see her at the board meeting. Many.many groups are coming together for one common cause. I think the message is obvious. GET RID OF LATHAN!

Anonymous said...

Sharon: about the books

I am a retired collegue teacher with four children now at RHS. Last P/T conferences I talk to the teachers about the new books. They told me they were surprised that nobody took their input about buying them. The books are terrible. Science, Social Studies and Spanish contain many major mistakes. Major as placing geographical landmarks in the wrong countries. The only reason given to teachers for buying these books was that those were the books used at NC schools. Clark told the teachers that complained that if they did not like the books, they could go to a different school where different books were used. A not confirmed version, is that there were kickbacks payed in NC. Maybe if we find the means to dig further in this, we may find a valid reason to get the board members and Lathan outsted. Please give me your feedback. I will ask my children to bring home their books and to check them and see by myself about those major deficiencies. I will keep you posted.

Sharon Crews said...

I believe there was some kind of kickback to someone--simply because 150 did not want to answer questions--and I was persistent in FOIAing questions. I would be happy to hear any info you can gather.

It was voted on and approved at a board meeting earlier in the year.

Here is the "contact us" information for pinpoint, from their own site:

It is Houghton-Mifflin Harcourt, bought and paid for.

Thanks to Emerge and Sharon for all the hard work they do for our students.

Someone should contact the fired associate supt about the book deal. I am going to speculate that she knows the real deal. And I am going to say that Harcourt thought bids had been taken..... or at least the top people in Harcourt thought bids were taken.

Sharon Crews said...

I did. There were no bids taken, for sure. It is possible that Harcourt was led to believe bids had been taken.
Also, Dr. Lathan stated in writing that teachers did not need to look at the books because there was a qualified science expert on her staff who did the job. I believe that was Kennedy.

Anonymous said...

Wasn't a Houghton Mifflin executive here because he and Lathan are friends? Would this be why no bids were put out? Would this be why they were ordered in a hurry, with absolutely no regard for when they were delivered?

Beginning a school year without the proper textbooks is a superintendent problem. Clearly. The BOE should have stopped her then!

Sharon Crews said...

I don't know anything about Lathan being a friend of a Houghton Mifflin executive. Someone was a friend of the textbook representative who did the audit.

Anonymous said...

Emerge, Sharon Crew, everybody...

Have any of you looked into the Paxton/Patterson connection to curriculum. Their "Growing Up Ready" program + all new computers was installed in "all middle schools" and their HS Voc/Tech program won the contract (as if their was bidding) at Woodruff. That's got to be at least 1.5 mil. In the same year as the 2 mil Houghton fracas.

Kids said it was great at first (who wouldn't want to make a smoothie rather than do math or spanish right?) Now, intense boredom is what I hear from them.

Anonymous said...

I looked over the school code today and found that not doing the bidding process for a purchase over $10,000 is a Class A misdemeanor. So Sharon, who is held responsible..the superintendent or the BOE. Where is Jerry Brookhart when you need him. If I am correct I think I recall Mr. Knapp stating this at a board meeting.

Sharon Crews said...

Terry did quite a bit of calling--exactly where did you find the over $10,000 limit--I would very much like to locate that information. The purchase of the insane Thinking Map books were way over $10,000, too.

Parent University has never had more than five parents show up and they're going to claim that that part of the strategic SNAFU is a success? Wow. I bet there have been more big foot sightings in Peoria than there have been parents at Parent University meetings. We've probably had more hurricanes in Peoria than parents at a Parent U meeting. I bet Sharon has watched Yo MTV Raps more times than there have been parents at the Parent U meetings.

$25,000 is still way below the money spent on the Houghton-Mifflin-Harcout books and the Thinking Maps--we're talking hundreds of thousands--over a million to that one company.

Whether or not people agree with me isn't important. Whether or not people care about District 150 does matter. Weren't there over one hundred of people at Monday's board meeting who expressed sentiments similar to those I expressed in the PJS?
Also, remember that PJS allows only paying subscribers (paying extra over and above subscription to the paper) to respond to articles--otherwise, you Anonymouses would undoubtedly have added your disagreement with my comments.
I honestly thought that the Parent University was Martha Ross's idea.

If all the teachers in D150 do such a great job and most all the building leaders are wonderful, why has there been an exodus of families and a continual decline in the students capabilities over the past 20 plus years? Gotta be Lathan, Hinton,et al, and the families fault. Sure. That's it.

How much validitity will the public give on a no confidence vote from a group who hasn't done their job of educating students? The no confidence vote has been done with the publics feet. Until ALL of you - Board, Admin, and teachers - own up to your responsibilities and demonstrate results, you will continue to lose. The lack of parental participation should tell you that you also need help from Springfield on properly structuring aid and tying it to higher educational expectations. Good luck with that.

Ah yes, can refute the message so correct the grammar. I thought this blog addressed that issue - many times. Unless you have worked in this chaotic atmosphere called D150, you do not have any idea what the teachers/principals are talking about. Think about having people WALKING through your classroom (that's not disruptive to the learning process, is it) to make sure you have all the "mandated" stuff hanging in your classroom, not to mention Thinking Map evidence and ACT like it's no big deal. Let me tell you, for this EXCELLENT teacher, it IS a big deal. My students need a caring, nurturing teacher that will prepare them for the next grade, not a cold-hearted ROBOT that is MORE concerned about collecting DATA and signing on to Compass Learning EVERY day(because we are being watched and they want to make sure we are keeping track of data). I love and care about my students and their families. Very difficult to teach NON-stop(bell to bell) when we having students coming and going all day long, let alone week to week MIGRATION. I recently received a student who is on his FIFTH classroom THIS year. Tell me PLEASE Anonymous, how I am to blame for this child's report card full of failing grades?

Wonder what our buddy Jim Stowell thinks of the recent events at D150 Any thoughts Jim???

Anonymous said...

"Can refute the message so correct the grammar." ??? Sooooooo. That's the point exactly. If it's unclear, how can one argue against it? Further, the point is that so many of the people blasting kids for not "meeting" on the ACT couldn't "meet" on the test themselves. It's that whole casting the first sting thing.

Anonymous said...

I hate the fact that Stowell was so anti-teacher and anti-union because -even though I strongly disagreed with him at times- I will give him credit for being an independent thinker. He didn't always vote with the majority. Too bad some of our current board members can't ever step out on their own and question some of these bizarre decisions.

I do not mean to speak for Mr. Stowell or his motivations but I am just asking this question in general. How often on any school board for any district, do you think that the people who vote against the majority really believe in their vote or are just part of an orchestrated effort to not look like voting robots?

Anonymous said...

I understand what the above anon is saying. There could be some truth to that. What I dont understand is board members, past and present, who NEVER speak. What's the point? Why run if you have nothing to contribute?

Hello to all. Last time here I asked to stop fighting in this forum and just focus on finding a viable and legal way to get rid of all those responsible for the actual chaos on D150.
A blogger asked me to tell you where to meet to plan the revolt. I was no talking about a revolt. These are tactics of the affected administrators for causing chaos in this forum (many administrator but no Lathan because she is incapable to write this good). So please let's ignore the negative comments and let's concentrate in finding the best way to have the board members resigning their positions and taking Lathan with them.
For this to be accomplished there is no need to meet. Let's start for taking the no-confidence vote, accompanied by a call sick day from teachers and support personnel (this is the right season for bugs to attack, and all employees have the right to call in sick).
When the Peoria community wakes up to find out the schools are closed for lack of teachers and support personnel, they would put it together with the no-confidence vote taken, and then they all would flood with messages and calls the board members. First step for them to find publicly that they are not wanted by the whole community (the number of votes they received was very low, anyway!)
The questions are: would we get enough support?
If Boards members resign, do we have in our community (no North Carolina) capable people willing to take on the responsibilities of being candidates to those positions?
A revolt? Maybe. Definitely, no a violent revolt.
Keep it up guys. There are some very brilliant minds in here.

It is the board watching group a good starting point for helping us to get organized? We are going to need as many e-mail addresses to spread our message.

I would be very willing to take a no confidence vote against the board and superintendent. However, a sick-out --- NO WAY! If we want to gain the support of the community a sick-out has too great of a potential to alienate them and I do not like the message it would send to my students.

Stowell doesn't matter now, although I don't think he was anti-teacher, just against a militant union mentality. I also don't think people should be so against what is trying to be accomplished, as much is driven by NCLB, which obviously isn't working. Yet,it is the structure which dictates to where the money flows. How one goes about gaining consensus (Supt)SHOULD be challenged, but until those admin involved in "reassignment" allow the public to hear the alleged transgressions, I think we are quick to defend, but really can't know all the facts. If it is only applying outside the district (which I strongly doubt), the lawsuits would be easy. This ain't. It is about expecting more from teachers, better from admin, and much much more from parents - who for too long in urban environments have used procreation as a means to a government check. Enough already! Education and the teachers that provide it should be highly valued by all. At some point, most everybody doesn't like a boss or their methods. That much we can work through. Neglecting a child and their value towards becoming educated SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED BY CIVIL SOCIETY. So what to do....

Sharon Crews said...

I've been thinking about the suggestions for all groups to unite for this particular cause. I'm not sure that is necessary. Teachers are already united. The NAACP members are united. Personally, I think that having several (even many)groups comprised of individuals with a common interest on many issues would show just as much solidarity on this issue than if we united into one big group. Having several unified voices speaking out would have to get the attention of even the board members whose heads (and ears) are buried deep in the sand.
Certainly, District Watch is a group open to those who have no already established collective voice to air their views. Of course, we would be happy to have any of you who care about District 150 come to our meetings. As I've said over and over, we don't speak as a group--we just give individuals the support and courage to speak for themselves on a variety of District 150 issues.
I still stand amazed that the District 150 board presented Dr. Lathan (and still persist with that lie) to us as a person whose experience and knowledge was a person who could lead District 150 in a new direction. Many are beginning to fear that direction and to realize that Dr. Lathan is all about building a reputation for herself that had not yet been established in the field of education and that her actions are not even close to being all about the children. We do need to speak out through whatever group or method available.
Saying it's so doesn't make it so. Dr. Lathan is making many claims for which she has absolutely no data to back her up.

Why can't we - as concerned citizens - do a better job of making sure that infants are prepared and engaged to come to our district ready and excited to LEARN?!!? All this other BS is just that - BS!!

I have yet to understand how Gloria Cox, who has only been a principal for the 7th and 8th grade academy at Manual since last August and never was a principal before, can get demoted. She wasn't even there long enough to get into her job. She is a bubbly person, great personality, the kids and teachers all really like her and they feel she is doing a great job. She makes it very positive, which is good for the students. This must be the criteria like the other three for getting rid of her too. If you are liked and get along with your employees, and do a great job, you are out.

Gloria Cox was the principal at Loucks before it closed.

I heard Jenkins gave her a bad evaluation which is funny because the other academy leaders should have been let go as well. They are lousy at their jobs, can't handle them and are very inefficient. But inefficiency is what the district likes. It isn't about the kids, but who will bow down to Lathan and do what she says with no questions asked!

The board president is a powerful position. She meets with the superintendent once a week to set the agenda for board meetings.

Linda Butler believes in her heart and mind that Lathan is Moses. She has stated it publicly in several venues.

Those that have spoken out have been demoted or left on their own because they saw what happened to those that did.

The culture of fear and intimidation lead by a tyrant has nothing to do with children and their learning. How can you seriously expect your principals to lead when your sup has a two year track record of throwing away people who have proven themselves as educated, compassionate, and committed to their jobs.

Simply stated- Lathan is a jealous, small minded woman who is racist and vindictive. Anyone expecting anything less evil and destructiveness is clueless...including Butler.

Anonymous said...

Jim Stowall told others that Lathan in closed session informed the board members that her hand picked asst sup was trying to undermine her and take her job. That is why they fired her with no cause.

Talk about paranoia. Her asst sup left a job in NC to work for her because she recruited her! And, then she fired her 6 months later. Crazy!!!!

I worked with Michelle, they fired the wrong person.

It is spring break: The best timing for the fhurer Lathan and her SS. By the time schools resume, nobody would be talking about demotions. Nobody would be talking about censorship. That night the board meeting would be business as usual. If you want that to happen, let’s continue this worthless gossip here. Otherwise, let’s get organized. Let’s elaborate our own agenda for getting Lathan out. Did you hear that during p/t conferences one of the parents involved in the rhs censorship case was already harassed by Clark? Please let’s talk about this matters and let’s get organized to fight !

Anonymous said...

Bottom line Clark is a bully just like Lathan...exactly the reason she was named principal...that and her friendship(?)with her boss Ravonda.

Sharon Crews said...

Anonymous above, are you the same Anonymous that has previously suggested we should organize? Doesn't it seem a bit strange to issue such a challenge without giving your name or suggesting how to start such a movement? Also, you have to understand that whatever Clark is doing or saying reflects her own fear of Lathan's actions. From what I know of the censorship case at RHS, Clark would have been in big trouble with Lathan if she hadn't taken the action she took to stop the presses. That said, I don't think it was appropriate for here to make some of the statements that have been attributed to her.
In lieu of organizing, I would suggest that all of us write relentlessly to the board, write Letters to the Editor to the PJS, and most of all attend board meetings and speak out. Up until the last two meetings, I usually can count on both hands the number of people who come and stay for the whole meeting. The majority of people come only when their children are being honored in some way--and after the event, they leave.
People have to make a habit of attending before these major issues are already in the works. The board needs to know people are paying attention.

Anonymous said...

Ravonda and Clark are continuously together in and out of school. Is Ravonda from NC? I heard it was Ravonda's idea that Clark be put at RHS; so I don't believe Clark is afraid of Lathan. She is her own person, but the students even want Clark out of there.

Anonymous said...

Yes Ms. Johnson (Ravonda) is from NC....hand picked by Lathan. You are right...Clark and Johnson always and I mean always together.

Anonymous said...

Clark was fired by the Catholic church and never ever the reason was giving. Both parts agreed to keep the secret therefore Clark’s reputation was still OK and the chuch did not have to be liable for Clark’s actions. Ever wondered why Clark’s top workers are ladies?

Anonymous said...

The students all know why. They call her the man woman. And yes she is always, always with Ravonda. The students feel Clark is doing a terrible job. And I agree. RHS was never like this previously. In the last year it has really gone down hill with this leader. Lathan didn't like Ptacek because he kept things under control and knew how to handle situations. Get rid of all NC personnel!

Sharon Crews said...

Anonymous bloggers can say all kinds of inappropriate things. I hope you aren't teachers. I guess you could make the same observation about Dr. Lathan--all her top workers are ladies.

Back to Sharon Crews'comments. Bloggers UNITE! Keep pressure on. Write letters to the newspaper. Attend board meetings. Picket board meeting twice a month. Speak at board meetings. Writing on this blog is not enough.

Anonymous said...

Sharon...are you the person to decide what is appropriate or inappropriate? I don't think these are meant as inappropriate comments...just people stating what they see with their own eyes. I have heard from numerous individuals that the students and parents at Richwoods are fed up with Clark and they are tired of being laughed at by the Notre Dame people about Clark. Lathan and Ravonda can control Clark because they have the inside scoop on her. Clark should wise up! Just sayin......

Anonymous said...

Sharon is just givng her opinion like everyone else.

Anonymous said...

Emerge- When is the next board meeting?

Sharon Crews said...

I guess I have to ask why Clark was not so received at Peoria High, where I believe she was well-liked. Also, RHS parents tired of being laughed at by Notre Dame people--how ridiculous. Also, the Catholic Church, in general, doesn't have to answer to anyone--public schools don't have that kind of privilege. Private schools laugh at 150 for all kinds of reasons. And we all know both sides of the story at Notre Dame--and District 150 did hire Clark anyway. I am amazed at how willing anonymous bloggers are to make insinuations that could cause them to be the subject of lawsuits for slander, libel, etc. Now you have added Johnson to your observations. That's why I do add my name to all my comments--keeps me saying things for which I don't want to be held accountable. Also, I know there is a danger that I may be criticizing someone I really like--hope not.

Anonymous said...

Slander? I don't see slander anywhere.

Anonymous said...

so Sharon let me get this straight...if you like the person then you are sorry you are disputing what they posted, but if you don't like them...go for it....you don't care. Really...that is interesting because that is how the District Watch is run...if we like you...do whatever, if we don't...we will make your life heck.

Anonymous said...

They'd complain if Jesus, Muhammad, and Ghandi were running things unless teachers got to dictate wages, benefits, hours worked, and who they taught. Then they'd just whine that they weren't appreciated for their efforts. Other than that, they are great people focused on the children.

Sharon Crews said...

No, I meant I hoped I wouldn't be disappointed by finding out that you are someone that I know.
As to the other post, do you expect teachers to work without decent wages or benefits--that they should work for minimum wage, etc., if they love children. The problem is that many teachers have their own families for whom they need to provide food, clothing, housing, and education, etc. Why shouldn't they be paid commenserate with their education? The other problem is that many in our society do work without fair wages. Their solution to the problem sometimes is that everyone should work under the same conditions. I would like for everyone to be paid a fair wage and benefits.

Sharon I make the statement at our last PTO meeting that we need to keep attending BOE Metings even once the issue with losing our Principals is over.

I'll be honest, before I had a child in school in District 150 I never paid attention to what went on with the schools. I had other things going on in my life that took up my time. Now that I have a child at Glen Oak I am fighting not just for her but for all kids who are going to school here.

I expect things to quite down over Spring Break but believe me there are at least a few of us who are not going to just go away. After all our kids still have to go to school after Spring Break is over too.

D150 teachers probably make more than 80% of the childrens families they serve. When are you going to advocate to give some back so we are more equal? That'd b fair.

Whether Clark is gay is irrelevant. What is relevant is that Lathan does keep dirt on her top folks to make them vulnerable. Revonda's are well known in certain circles. Tim's are well documented.

I agree with Spikeles.
Anonymous, the problem, of course, is that we can't tell how many anonymouses are speaking on a particular subject (one or more than one), so when the "I'm confused" Anonymous feeds off of and agrees with another Anonymous, then you could be accused of sharing the same accusations. Of course, both or one of you are trying to be cute with innuendoes. Of course, the Anonymous (the one that was the first to use the word "gay") added innuendoes about two other people. We all know the "code" words, etc.
The point is that none of what any of you are saying furthers any attempts to improve District 150. Your accusations and innuendoes are irrelevant to the issues that concern most of those who write on this blog.
