Recently, Dennis in Peoria suggested that Emerge Peoria has a problem with too many Anonymous commenters. While I understand his point of view - my point of view is that unless you are sitting behind the computer screen, with the person who is commenting at the time - everybody is anonymous, including Dennis in Peoria.
NEW YORK STATE LEGISLATORS WANT TO BAN ANONYMOUS COMMENTS
The cowboys in the New York State Assembly and Senate are trying to wrassle the wild from the internet frontier. And their lasso is spinning directly towards you, internet. The bill, called the Internet Protection Act, was introduced on Monday by co-sponsors Republican Assemblyman Jim Conte and Republican Senator Thomas O’Mara. In an attempt to “crack down on cyber-bullying,” they’re going after anonymous commenters on all New York websites, including:
“social networks, blog forums, message boards or any other discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages.”
So basically, all of the internet. They want every comment ever made on New York City websites to make sure the poster’s:
“IP address, legal name, and home address are accurate. All web site administrators shall have a contact number or e-mail address posted…clearly visible in any sections where comments are posted.”
Because the one thing we want on the internet is for everyone to know what we’re doing on the internet (hi DHS!). Conte is also looking out for your Yelp reviews. He wrote that “in addition to cracking down on cyber-bullying, the bill also prevents people from posting anonymous criticism of local businesses,” which really should be the responsibility of the individual website. Leave small businesses alone! We don’t need even more government, right? This might not be the ultimate reason, though, because Conte does admit that removing anonymity is an attempt to curtail “mean-spirited and baseless political attacks.” He might be forgetting Santorum’s “Google problem” was far from anonymous. People in this city are losing the jobs and for what? Does Dennis know any of these people? I do, and they do not deserve the treatment they are getting. No one else wants to be harassed by Lathan and her suck up principals, but they want the information as to what is actually going on to get out to the public.
The Journal Star is sadly lacking.
I thought this information could already be traced, whether or not someone leaves his/her name. Am I wrong? I thought this was how cyber bullies were located in recent prosecuted cases.
When we don't agree with Anonymous bloggers, we tend to be irritated by them. When we agree with them, we aren't as bothered. There is no way to avoid Anonymous bloggers because creative ones can invent new names often. I'm just happy that we have the opportunity to speak our mind--with anonymity, if necessary. Emerge does a good job of screening inappropriate entries.
I have never kept my identity a secret. I have told people who I am. I have met Sharon Crews, Terry Knapp knows me; Emerge has emailed me a few times.
For those that don't know me, I am the Media Services Coordinator for PCCEO, the Community Action Agency serving Peoria County. My department does public relations for PCCEO, with broadcast video production being one of our tools. We use video to produce CAPtions, a weekly TV issues program that's been on the air almost 37 years; and JT's Bourbon St. LIVE, a local entertainment program. But I also go out and cover news items, such as last night's rally, and upload it as a "CAPtions Web Extra" if I don't have time to put in on the air. Here is our web page:

I've been employed here almost 26 years, have many good friends especially in the African-American Community. Including people like Don Jackson, Rita Ali and Joyce Banks, Carl Cannon, Agbara Bryson, Andre Bohannon, many more.
I have seen lots of changes happening at the State, City, and School district level. Some things I agree with, others I am disgusted with. I won't go into that right now, I have to take off to video a positive event at Harrison School: Head Start End of Year Celebration.
I have never been against people posting anonymously. But when you see 3-4 or more posts in a row by Anonymous, how can you know whether it's not the same person or not? You can't. That is why I suggested people be required to put a number or letter next to it, and always post with that ID. They can still keep their ID secret, and I understand why.
I don't see the issue as being an attempt to determine the real identity of posters, but rather the ability to recognize whether related posts are from one person or multiple people who have each opted to appear simply as "anonymous".
It's really not difficult to post under some private identity other than the term anonymous...just choose "Name/URL" and enter whatever identity you may choose to post under and don't fill out the optional URL designation.
Hi Dennis nice to meet you...
Thank you for your explanation... I was mainly just giving you a hard time, I totally understand what you mean about all the anon stuff. If it comes down to having anon or no comments, I would go with the anon.
I do try and monitor comments, although I don't have the time or inclination to track IP addresses, I do look at them enough to be assure you that the comments are coming from different posters.
I think Dr. Lathan is doing a terrific job!! :)
Emerge, thanks for clarification. Not being a blogger myself, I don't know what details blog moderators can view or track as far as comments from anonymous posters.
The last post proves Emerge's point--anyone can post in my name. However, I will always be here to deny the comment. However, I do believe she is doing a terrific job of destroying District 150--her efforts are truly remarkable!
I just watched the news and learned Lathan ran an ad in todays PJStar touting her accomplishments that cost taxpayers $2,500! WTF is this woman thinking? I'd like my tax dollars back please.
And I'd also like that bonus money back.... What a bunch of hooey!!
The ad in PJStar shows how much a force that this blog is b/c it was in the providing of info surrounding Curtin and Ungurait here that people could find out information. Thanks Emerge for offering insight from others that attempts to explain why things are as they are in PSD 150.
I feel the same way, Anon. She was answering the questions/issues presented here on Emerge's blog. We always knew she was monitoring this blog, along with her NC buddies.
To the earlier Anon, she spent $2500 on the ad, along with offering $10,000 to the teachers with unsatisfactory evaluations so the district (gasp!) would make their final evaluation a satisfaction and they would resign. There were over 30 teachers with unsatisfactory evaluations. The school board, acting on behalf of the citizens of Peoria, are allowing bribery. Oh my.
Yes, satisfaction should say satisfactory.
And now for something different and positive:
