It can only get better, right?

While anxiously awaiting District 150's 2011-2012 AYP information, let's revisit District 150's 2010-2011 AYP information. It can only get better, right?

Off topic, sorry

From the board's agenda for Monday:

10. SUPERINTENDENT’S CONTRACT – Kinney
Proposed Action: The Board of Education is asked to approve a four year contract extension for Superintendent Dr. Grenita
Lathan commencing July 1, 2012 and terminating on June 30, 2016.

11. PERFORMANCE BASED STIPEND - Kinney
Proposed Action – The Board of Education is asked to approve the performance-based stipend for the superintendent for the
2011-2012 school year.

I was just going to post the same thing. A four year extension along with a performance-based stipend? I'll bet money that the board agrees to all of it. So sad ... so very sad!

Absolutely, let's extend the idiot's contract and give her another big fat bonus. What is Kinney drinking? What is the BOE drinking, for that matter. These scores are atrocious. Explain to me why Annette Coleman is being replaced by a principal whose scores are even WORSE than Glen Oaks?

It is important to remember that ISAT "meets", simply means working at grade level, or AVERAGE.....in layman's terms, a C.

Why didn't you list all D150 schools?

I don't expect much of ostriches with their heads in the sand.

If they extend her contract it will prove that the board is officially the worst in the country. If she left now it would take years to fix it...in four- no one above the poverty line will be left in the city school system. No one. Peoria will look like Gary Indiana in how broken it will become- all b/c of the schools.

$198,000 A $10,000 bonus and $8,000 in her retirement fund a year to screw up a school district and divide a community isn't enough money. Screw that tell her to pack her bags. Or tell her there is cheap wigs somewhere else and she might leave on her own. Butler and her zombies need to stop drinking the Kool Aid and wise up.

Why are we renewing her contract ahead of time? This same thing happened with Pam Shau and Deb Dimke. They insisted a year early to get their contract extended and how much did that cost us when we got rid of them? If we had waited a few months, they would have been gone any way. The board needs to be dealt with for keeping Lathan. It is time to get rid of the board--now not later.

I know I'm going to be the odd man out - but let's talk about what the students taking this test! I work in a District 150 school - one of the highest with poverty & mobility in the district (can you guess why I'm posting anonymously?!?)

So, the students that enter our school in kindergarten, often come with no pre-school experience; don't know their colors, shapes, letters, or numbers. Believe it or not, we have kindergarteners who come to school not even knowing their real name.
In contrast, my children enter kindergarten (again in District 150), pretty much knowing how to read, can count to 110 and not only know their name but how to read, write & spell it.

So, thinking that in 3.5 years (kids take ISAT for the first time half way through third grade), more than 50% meet or exceed on ISAT, I'm pretty pumped!

As challenge everyone who complains about schools in general and ISAT - don't judge until you see what the schools are really working with!

Yes lets talk about the students taken the test or even better not taken the test with a big smile on their face telling the teacher that they are failing on purpose to get that teacher fired. or the kindergardener that wasn't potty trained and still wearing a pull up. or the 5th grader who got kicked out of school 2 weeks before the end of school because she hadn't had her shots. No we shouldn't blame the teachers or the princepals (another lathan screw job) the parents suck all D150 is to alot of people is a babysitter so they can sleep all day.

Now - get rid of tenure and start tying state/federal or any other aid to student performance and we might actually begin making progress.

Call the Board members and ask questions or tell them how you feel. I did and those I spoke with said they are getting mostly positive comments about the extension from parents and those that matter. I guess for some, if their opinion "doesn't matter" - there's YOUR problem. In November, about half of America won't like our nations chosen leader either, but productive citizens need to focus on the job to do, not who is sitting in the captains chair. This site has too much mindless complaining and no real solutions. Work on that....

I
As a d150 employee, I am well aware of retaliation from administrators. Lathan is hateful when talkingto her principals, yet drips honey when talking to the board. Duel personality for sure. She is a wolf in sheeps clothing (or cheap wig)...

You can see how we teachers are being treated even after showing up in a large number to show are unhappiness with the job being done by the superintendent. Why is it that, no matter the topic, we teachers are characterized as whiny babies?

I would love to have an intelligent conversation with the board regarding the problems and issues which are currently at work in our schools. Unfortunately, the majority of them have already proven they do not care nor want to hear any negativity regarding Lathan and her minions. Hence the comment about what they've heard being positive. They completely ignore anything else.

Interesting to read all of your comments. I am from Galesburg. I saw this website on my facebook page and thought the headlines re:super interesting so I clicked it. We here in Galesburg hear about your district school business and I can tell you that we chuckle at some of the admin decisions. We find the decision making process humorous. I believe if strange folks were laughing at district 66 I would feel insulted and ashamed. As a citizen who believes in the process of choice I believe I would start with my choice of who I want representing me and my tax dollars. I believe I would be talking to the city aldermen/women and see what I could do; I know we here who live in 66 would pay special attention to who we chose to sit on our school board. So why aren't you the citizens taking another route? Your reputation needs help!

Jen, for a long time, it's been so much easier for Peoria citizens to b****h and complain here on the blogs and the newspaper instead of picking up a petition and running for election to the the same school board they hate so much.
There were 2 seats up for election this year, and no opposition to the incumbents at all. As the cliche goes, "Don't be a part of the problem if you aren't willing to be a part of the solution"

meanjarhead said...

Dennis i am running for the next seat up in my area.

Judging schools based on ISAT scores is like judging a person by his/her weight, cholesterol, blood sugar level, etc. There's way more to the picture than just one number.

Go ahead and make statements like "These scores are horrible!!" once you go in and see what's really going on in those building & in the test-takers lives.

Sounds good, meanjarhead. I look forward to seeing a campaign with 2 candidates instead of 1. People need a choice in elections.

I wish Terry would run and be elected to the BOE. Then Dr. Lathan would have somebody on the board who cares about the students in Peoria, and somebody who will seek out the truth. He has done his due diligence when he gets up to speak at BOE meetings. He is a Peorian who is not easily led down the primrose path that our current board members enjoy.

Sharon Crews said...

Terry will never run for school board. Besides his contribution is probably greater now than it would be if he were on the board. He would be the Gary Sandburg of District 150--and his vote would count for nothing because chances are great that he would never be in the majority. The amazing thing is that Terry does his due diligence even though it isn't required of him.
I found it interesting that Terry tells us more and speaks longer at each board meeting than does any other single board member. Meeting after meeting goes by and most board members never give us a clue as to why they vote as they do on any given issue.
Tomorrow night wouldn't we all like to hear why each board member feels Lathan's contract should be extended for four years. My guess is that we will hear little except the "Ayes have it."

meanjarhead said...

If i win i will be the Gary Sandburg of the school board. I will listen to the public and react accordingly. I am supposed to have lunch with Gary soon I will be taking a lot of notes.

Sharon, so true.

Not so fun fact everyone Peoria district 150 out of 777 school districts in the state is ranked 667th.

667th? REMARKABLE!!!!
