Some clarification of the issue of "school choice"

Time is running short on getting those boundary waiver and choice forms in!

Thanks to tls1995, we now know that if you received a NCLB letter telling you that your child is eligible for school choice, the forms for making a choice are somewhat convoluted. tls1995 was concerned that she may have the wrong form. The form she has only shows middle school choice, her child is a primary school student. Apparently, if she wants to opt out of her school, she will need to click here for a different application and get the form into the District Office by Wednesday, August 8, 2012.

Thanks to Anonymous for providing the information. It's a good thing that people who work for the District read this blog!

When I clicked on the form this morning, I got a message that the page with the form had moved. I have updated the link above.

tls1995 - I would be very specific as to the school(s) you are interested in transferring to and see if any of them are a possibility, otherwise, I would stay the course and go to St. Thomas.

You also may want to make a end run around the system and begin where you wish to land. Stop by Kellar and let them know you have been notified you are eligible for a transfer but have received the wrong form. Tell them you wish your daughter to be transferred to Kellar, etc.. Work it a little from that angle and see how far you can get. Show that you are an involved parent and have a child that is on task . . . maybe, just maybe . . . something could work out for you.

Again, I am "frustrated" for you that you cannot determine definitively what school your child can be placed in now and know the matter is settled.

For all you experts, suppose tls1995 can make the transfer to a different primary school, can she be guaranteed that her daughter can return to that same school for 4th grade? What if her daughter is placed at Kellar for 2 years, then can she transition to Lindbergh with all her peers or is it a crap shoot again where she will land?

tls1995 needs to ask a lot of questions.

Thanks for the correct form. I wonder who else got the incorrect form and doesn't realize it?

Frustrated - We have applied to St Thomas but have not gotten the acceptance yet. At this point we are just trying to cover all bases.

tls1995 - there are TWO different forms. One is for NCLB and the other is for District 150's separate program. The link Emerge and 2Anon provided is for the latter (D150) program. You may still want to contact the administration to get a corrected NCLB form.

I think if she gets into Kellar she will automatically be allowed to transition to Lindbergh. Say Hello to the Fab Five for us. ;-)

NCLB rules will not let a student transition directly from the primary school to the middle school that it normally feeds into....she will not be able to say hello to the Fab Five...

tls1995 - The above post indicates that your daughter would not be able to necessarily attend the feeder MS of the primary school she transfers to. You should confirm that fact for yourself but . . . for me that would be red flag.

MS is a critical time for students to launch themselves academically and socially. If you have no guarantee what MS your daughter will head to, what is the point of transferring to a different primary school??

I agree Frustrated.

We left 150 after it became clear that every year it was necessary to make a decision about what school would be best for our student and then hope by the good will of the District she would land in that place. We found little good will at the District.

Cheers to our second year of stability and growth!

Emerge - I had no idea you left the District. I too have cut and run. My oldest graduated this past May and while she had some very dedicated teachers and staff, much of her year was hit and miss in terms of overall quality of teaching. Though I think many are well-intentioned at the District, the constant chaos and lack of clear vision would cause the most motivated of staff to lose steam, so I can understand the malaise of District employees.

We have fled to the Chicago suburbs and are enrolled in a highly touted school district in order for our other child to complete her education. We will soon see what all the huff & puff is about and whether it turns out to be a good decision. But of course the advocacy never ends . . . I am meeting today to sort out transcripts, get permission to take a 2nd foreign language outside the school setting, etc.

tls1995 - please stay the course. If you make a pain of yourself to get what your child needs, be it at the District, St. Thomas, wherever you land -- then you can rest at night and know you did all you could.

Our next step is out of Peoria as well.

It's quite unfortunate that just the kind of families they need in Peoria and the District are still getting out as fast as they can.

Frustrated - Welcome to the Chicago 'burbs (I'm guessing Naperville?).

Unfortunately, now some will think you are no longer qualified to comment here about D150 - though I guess you've been thru that already.

Not sure if that is a new NCLB regulation or if in fact the District never adhered to it but the past practice has been that if you "opt in" to Kellar you can automatically "opt in" to Lindbergh. So give the Fab 5 a high 5.

"Opt in" to Kellar and Lindbergh is completely different than NCLB......So....too bad so sad...no high 5 to the Fab 5

Jon - Is Naperville where you relocated? So far the school has been super accommodating. My child is being allowed to leave during the school day to take a class at a nearby college. This allows her to continue studying a foreign language that was not offered at the HS and which she had to suspend studying during her time in Peoria. I am just in the honeymoon phase so I am sure we will hit some bumps in the road at some point, but overall the new school seems to offer what we are looking for.

Lake in the Hills is a good area too. I got my kids out of the district as fast as I could with all the craziness going on out on Wisconsin last school year. They are not for the children at all. Their teachers were great but I too couldn't take all the chaos from the Administration. I feel sorry for the teachers and staff in 150 as they have a lot to put up with alot from all the NC people.

Jon - You are in a great area as well. Hope things are working well for you and your family.
