Mayor Jim Ardis announces plans for re-election - UPDATED

Gun violence skyrockets over weekend
"Peoria police are wrapping up a busy weekend dealing with an usual amount of gun violence. Saturday alone racked up nearly a dozen incidents." Source

This political postcard, sent by then-candidate Jim Ardis’ mayoral campaign
committee in 2005, highlighted the violence Peoria was experiencing at that
time and pledged that a vote for Ardis was “a vote for safer neighborhoods.” pjstar

4016 actual victims of crimes in august 2012 That number doesn't include those affected by the crime, such as the next door neighbors of a shooting, etc.

Given that crime rate and the rough population of the city of Peoria, every man, woman and child, has the potential of being a crime victim each 2 year, 6 week cycle.

so in a 4 year term, expect to be a crime victim twice. Something to look forward to when you cast your ballot.

That burglary number CANNOT be correct! I find it very hard to believe when burglaries have infiltrated EVERY neighborhood, at times in BROAD DAYLIGHT, a phenomenon not seen until 2012. Homeowners in the East Bluff are literally stuck, as some homes have taken up to 2 years to sell!

I REALLY find the burglary statistic hard to believe, as drug trafficking has skyrocketed in the East Bluff, increasing crime that has not been seen as harsh and heavy in that area.

I can't tell you how many times drug deals went on right in front of my eyes in Kroger parking lot on Wisconsin, in daylight, with no attempt to conceal. I know when I'm being watched as a suspected "undercover", as it happened a lot in Indianapolis when I worked with inner-city teens, and it broke my heart when the very same thing happened everytime I went to that Kroger.

I have no idea what Mayor Ardis is smoking.

Your posting of Ardis' political postcard is very poignant.
I predict this inept citizenry will thumb their nose up at viable candidates with new views such as C. J. and keep the same-same.

You ought to be able to take an intelligence test about basic economics & civics and , if you pass, your vote should count for two or more votes. I think my vote should count five votes! Lol

Such as was the case with CJ

yes crime happens all over. I think since we live here, Peoria should be our focus.

Now Bradley students are being robbed at gunpoint. Bradley is a significant economic engine in the west bluff. As much as the residents gripe about the students, they too would fall to the crime and slumlords circling around them. Most of the students really aren't coming from families that are going to leave their children to be shot or otherwise attacked. fewer students, few professors and the pay that goes with them, fewer businesses getting their goods and services bought around the campus, fewer deliveries, fewer maintenance parts, and all the other companies who service BU and the employees that they pay. Next week starts the budget meeting. I would be willing to bet that no one, but the two people from the south end that always speak will be there to say anything on how OUR (it is ours by the way) money is being spent. No one will hold them accountable. No one will speak on the effects that crime has on their lives. The crime spike is a direct response to irresponsible budgeting and spending of our tax dollars.
They are gearing up to blame the pension system. While it does need work, if the council were concerned they would not have robbed the employees of their pension money to the tune of $7 million for Matthews and hotel albatross.
Note tonight that the same council members that were ready to rob the southtown tif for the hotel were acting like they never had that vote, congratulating and trying to get some "glory" from their vote. BVA and Spain who were openly pissed with the vote then had to take to not raid the TIF money for the warehouse district and hotel. Note that there is money left, they will work to swipe the rest of it, keep an eye out. Those that are satisified with the direction of the city can stay at home nursing a broken axel from the potholes and try to avoid the gunshots and assaults in their neighborhoods.

Please forgive me, Emerge, for using this thread to ask a question.

Does anyone know what the story is with the kiosk at the old Town and Country Bowl touting free cell phones and free minutes?

Anonymous said...

only free cell phones and free minutes are the government ones supposedly for low income people only.

Very popular in our neighborhood. Drug dealers use them all the time, just not publicized.

2 more shot on Starr St. Guessing since they were head shots most likely homicides.
The only thing Don't Shoot has done, is let people know what to yell before taking a bullet.

I knew it was ten (now 11) homicides this year. Where did I see 8??

I think 1 homicide was determined to be in self-defense, but I'd have to check. That was a stabbing if I am correct. Also, I'm not sure if they are counting the lady whose body was found in a cornfield recently as a Peoria homicide.

Last night's shooting victims included a white male, according to PJS. He is still in the hospital.

My take on all this, and Randall, I know you will disagree...but you could have 25-30 more cops on the streets at all times, and they still won't be able to stop idiot folks who decide to settle disputes with a gun. It also seems more older folks are getting shot this year, not the young people.

A cop will rarely be right at a house or scene where folks will start shooting. But I concede that while police cannot prevent the shooting, they may be quicker on the scene to chase, catch the suspects.

When I was recording the candidates forum Monday night, SA candidate Frank Ireulli did make a good point about why Peoria didn't start the "Don't Shoot" initiative at an earlier time. Maybe that's a good question to ask those who would know the answer.

Randall said...

Oh I agree. Police can not be everywhere and you can't prevent this type of shooting. But you sure as hell can put a dent in crimes overall with more police and active enforcements.
