Is this the "binder full of women"

... the Mormon candidate for the President of the United States was referring to, when asked about what the candidates would do to address gender inequality in the workplace:

In response to a question about what the candidates would do to address gender inequality in the workplace, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said that when he was governor and looking to fill his cabinet,"women groups brought him whole binders full of women."

There are men in this cabinet.

Mitt wants to put women in binders, we can't let this dude get elected!

In 2002 PRIOR to the election, not even knowing yet whether it would be a Republican or Democratic administration, a bipartisan group of women in Massachusetts formed MassGAP to address the problem of few women in senior leadership positions in state government.

There were more than 40 organizations involved with the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus (also bipartisan) as the lead sponsor.

They did the research and put together the binder full of women qualified for all the different cabinet positions, agency heads, and authorities and commissions. They presented this binder to Governor Romney WHEN HE was elected.

Romney’s claim that he asked his team as the sitting governor of Mass. for such a study is false because he wasn't the governor yet.

Oh, and once Romney had those binders? He hired women for agencies he then cut the funding for.

There were actually fewer women in executive positions when Romney left office than there were when he started.

Just one more example of how sketchy Romney continues to be.

I do not understand how Mitt can say he wants to grow jobs in America and at the same time alienate China, the biggest trading partner of the U.S.??

Most jobs that have vanished from the U.S. are gone forever. They were low skill jobs that the U.S. paid too much for. U.S. companies must compete in a global marketplace, and so wages must be based on economics.

Obama had the right answer, we must train workers for the new economy and the jobs that DO exist, which require technical training and/or college-level skills.

Thank you for being a stand-up person and not disguising your bigotry.

Wow. The irony in the ANONYMOUS comment above must have been lost on its author.

Same thing I was thinking Tyler.

Hey you District 150 people who read this blog...

The PPD needs you to pick up the phone (something about Von Stuebin).

The binder is a metaphor for Affirmative Action.

Okay, I'll say it: What if someone wrote the same words about Obama, and the words on the file said "All My Babies"? I don't see a difference...a line has been crossed. Yes, feel free once again, anyone, to call me 'weak'. I am an Independent...regardless of politics, Emerge, you've offended any Mormon who reads this blog. If anyone out there needs further explanation, I'll refer you to at least 3 books you can read on your own time.

Appreciate your blog, Emerge. You know I support you.

Emerge Peoria said...

If Obama said what Romney said and instead referred to a "binder full of babies," his comment would have been depicted just like you indicated.

But Obama didn't say that.

I appreciate your comments, but apples to apples please, Janet.

I'm not understanding your response, Emerge. Why "All My Wives" and not "binder full of women"..wouldn't THAT be apples to apples? Why did you display the chosen title in the picture?

To me it implies a polygamous Mitt Romney...not a reference to a "binder full of women". Look, I'm an Independent looking at both parties...in all sincerity, I need a more detailed explanation of your choice of image, because to me it's an offensive stereotype to Mormons, a religion of which I am not a member, yet I'm somewhat well-read on the subject.

As I said before, I can list 3 to 4 books, ones in my personal library...yet maybe your whole point is just going right over my head. I'm just not seeing where "All My Wives" is not an offensive stereotype. Can you help me out here???

I have an abstract painting hanging on my wall. It is often that I wish I could discuss the piece with the artist and find out exactly what he means by "Forbidden Rose Garden," because in the painting, I can't find a rose or a garden. It's about ten years later, and I still can't figure it out. But that's okay, it's art and it's open to interpretation.

I don't owe you my in depth interpretation of what I post, Janet. You don't like it, you made that clear, but to persist as if I need to go in depth with you about a political cartoon... I'm not going to do it. Take from it what you will - I'm fine with that. You always have that option on anything I post. Does that help?

In other words, Emerge meant it as a stereotype of Mormons and their previous endorsement of polygamy

For anybody to read this blog and to think you can take away my true feelings on any subject matter would be a mistake. In case you didn't read it in my bio, my writing style is roman `a clef.

I am often surprised to find that people want to read so much more into posts than I really intend to personally convey. FACT: my true personal opinion is highly guarded on most matters. I actually consider myself quite the sardonic comedienne.

I appreciate you guys reading... but really, I'm going to need to for y'all to chill - it's just a blog, I do for fun. Don't sweat it - I don't.

I have a question--probably irrelevant, but does the Mormon religion still allow for polygamy even though American Mormons adhere to the law and, therefore, have only one wife?
I am not opposed to a Mormon being President of the United States (doesn't mean I want Romney to be President). However, I grew up in a church (and I doubt that the views of that church have changed) like many churches labeled as "Fundamentalist" where Mormonism was not looked upon with favor. In fact, I remember that in my youth I was often warned never to open the door or engage in conversation with the young Mormon men who frequently knock on doors as part of their mission
I find it somewhat disconcerting (rather than amusing) that these same people are currently revising their convictions to ease their consciences as they go to the polls to vote for Romney. Prior to this moment they would not have considered voting for a Mormon. I find it significant that they are willing to revise their theological convictions for political reasons--seems hypocritical to me.

Emerge, for the record, I thought the sterotype was a fine use of sardonic humor. It was caustic and I appreciate the jab at Mormonism. Sharon is right about the fundamental view of Mormons being a cult. I have seen it listed as such in multiple classrooms at PCS. However, Sharon should learn how to use this internet thing. Quick Google search would allow you to get that answer. Maybe not opening the door for the Mormons has lead you to this ignorant position.

Anonymous said...

Ok. You opened the door. Obama, while maybe not a muslim himself, surrounded himself with them while growing up. And the stretch, weren't the terrorists of 911to present muslims? Dont be so quick to paint ALL with the same brush because it works both ways. If obama losez, its because he FAILED AT THE JOB.

Anonymous said...

And the black culture are very familiar with affirmative action!

Sharon Crews said...

What do you mean "Obama surrounded himself with Muslims when he was growing up." For a time, he lived in a Muslim country and he was a kid--he didn't surround himself--he may have been surrounded by Muslims.
Also, to the Anonymous who said I should use the Internet, have you ever heard of a rhetorical question?

Anonymous said...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhetorical_question

I looked it up.

Sharon Crews said...

In all fairness, my question doesn't really qualify as a rhetorical question--but I wasn't sure to what presumed ignorant position of mine you were referring.
