More wasted lives....sad.
BTW, why did you close comments on the Colin Powell post? If he'd endorsed Romney, he'd have closed the door on many lucrative opportunities to address black groups. It was a financial decision.
Felon caught with gun should be SHOT in head with gun. Because they apparently can't be reablitated by the prison system why waste more money and give them a chance to BREED more STUPID people,
Eye in the Sky
Jail overcrowding? If so, surely they could have found someone else to release! This jerk should have been held without bail pending court appearance.
don't shoot .. yeah ok if i can get away with it like they can i might as well. who was the judge and the states attorney is these case.. u r not doing ur job to lazy to keep these stupid ass punks off the street.. county over crowed that u let them out what is this caterpillar last ones that get employed r the first to b lead off.. and he a felony just throw the stupid ones rite back on the street.. don't shoot my ass..
I heard on the police scanner this morning that a bus driver heard a rumor that a student was trying to board a D150 school bus and he had a gun. As a result, the bus driver wouldn't let anybody on the bus.
Of course, I didn't hear the outcome on the scanner and more than likely this will not be in the news. So, we can probably assume that it worked out alright.
What are the thoughts on the States Attorney candidates? I am trying to make a decision on whom to vote for and not sure which one is the better option. All this craziness in Peoria doesn't make me feel real positive about Mr. Brady.
I was at the neighborhood meeting with the city council today. Eric Turner was the only city council member present. I noted that one person arrested was released 14 minutes from being booked. There are plenty of other examples. I was told that this was not the fault of the city (which I knew), but it was the fault of the judges. I noted that these people had been booked they would not have gone to a hearing to see a judge. The blame was shifted to the state's attorney's office. The most ironic part is that was the answer given to follow up questions. The anwsers and comments were given by several of the same neighbors from Mr. Brady's commercial. Although I didn't ask them, I wondered why they were in a commercial for the state's attorney and them blamed him for letting people out of jail on Notices to Appear
I am supporting Frank Ierulli. I have noticed the same people being arrested, the same addresses cropping up being used by criminals. The neighborhood president that I attended the event with, asked about attatching liens (basically fining) landlords who are part of the problem. That was shot down, citing Indianapolis ordinance was overturned. Indiana has different laws. Other Illinois cities have tougher ordinances, but no reason in debating it as that problem will never be addressed adequately. I noted the most significant decline in our neighborhood has been the increase in crime and the decrease in code enforcement and police coverage. I noted how successful our neighborhood was when there was adequated coverage. The response was we don't have the money. Yet the council completely controls the purse strings and the priorities. I was told that if we wanted higher taxes then we could have more police. (note: the "garbage tax" designed to pay for public safety no longer does, that money was spent on other items and raised supposedly to cover the cost of the garbage service, but PDC isn't even billing for the service it provides, we have to subsidize PDC by paying for their billing costs and having someone else do it). Bringing up the hotel and the increased debt service as items not needed to be funded by tax dollars was met with very strong opposition and defensiveness.
We were also informed that Don't Shoot will take 10 years to implement. I had not heard that one before.
It was a morning wasted, other than the french toast at Perkins with a good friend.
As to the State's Attorney Race...
I know both individuals and each is essentially a good and decent person, as well as being bright and articulate.
I admittedly am a Democrat and generally tend to vote as such and I intend to vote for Jerry Brady. However I am doing so, not because he is the Democratic candidate, but, rather because I believe he has done a more than adequate job during his brief tenure.
I additionally have some concerns with Frank.
- I’m not certain as to whether Frank or political professionals are the genesis of his advertising campaign but I believe his assertion of a 100% conviction rate in 10 murder trials to be intellectually dishonest in its implications. It is my understanding while he may have been involved for the prosecution in those trials, that he actually never once was the primary attorney in any of those cases and rather served as the "second chair" or "third chair" in each of those cases. While the content of his advertisement may not be exactly false, certainly its tenor and implications are. I don’t believe that the public should be required to carefully parse what a State’s Attorney says. He or she, and the election campaign, should be up-front, straightforward and candid.
- Recognizing that perhaps the State’s Attorney position should be non-partisan, nonetheless it is not. Frank's "conversion" from Dem to Repub only occurred when he was not chosen by the County Board for the State's Attorney position and prior to that he had never voted as a Republican but always as a Democrat. I personally find the repudiation of such long term values under those circumstances to be a bit of a red flag, particularly considering the position involved.
- The senior members of the State's Attorney's Office are clearly professional prosecutors. They are politically right of center and mostly have Republican leanings. They worked with Frank for a considerable period of time and voice no personal or professional animosity toward him, yet are unanimous or near-unanimous in supporting Jerry despite their personal political leanings.
Spikeless, as long as you are content with pushing Don't Shoot right before the election in front of the media while letting felons out on the street who were caught possessing a gun in the best interest of public safety and ethically sound, then vote away. Criminals will continue undisturbed and owe you a great deal of thanks.
Anonymous @ 6:22, notwithstanding your ad hominem approach let me address your underlying premise instead. The fact of the matter is that PJS was wrong in its article...THE MAN DID NOT HAVE A GUN, I repeat DID NOT HAVE A GUN, but rather had something akin to brass knuckles, not good but considerably different from a handgun. Additionally, there were significant questions as to the accuracy of some of the information originally conveyed to the police about the shooting incident itself, and that there may be resultant issues as to the propriety of the arrest and search itself.
Also, unlike so many of the right wing conspiracists out there today, I am willing to accept that the reporter who wrote the erroneous story simply made a mistake of some sort and not infer anything from the fact that his family has been a significant donor to the Ierulli campaign or that such played any part in the printing of the factually incorrect story.
So please feel free to attack me further all you may wish but at least be sure of the facts.

Spikeless, going by the Pjstar article. If you have evidence to the contrary then present it and ask for a retraction. you're asking me to take by faith that under an assumed name that you have the facts vs. the reporter. I will admit, pjstar has gotten facts wrong, but they also tend to lean to the left vs. the "right wing conspiracists. I would also make a guess that if you have such information then you are the perpertrator, the prosecutor, the defense attorney or the arresting officer. Each has their own agenda. In looking at the overall process, repeat offenders are in and out of the jail. This is possible as they are released and any potential resulting sentences are inadequate.
It is not unreasonable in sense of the form to read that a convicted felon has been released on an NTA or worse a PR, with a gun or other weapon and demand more from someone running for the office whose sole responsibility is to address crime through upholding the laws through prosecution. I would submit that Ierulli statements are red herrings in that he at this point is NOT the person to hold accountable for such actions. We must hold our officials feet to the fire or replace them with someone who will. To throw out that there has been some impropriety by the challanger is simply smoke and mirrors, a basic attorney strategy to try to distract the weak minded into looking the other way and ignore what is happening in front of them.
I am not attacking you, I don't even know who you are, your statements are written on a forumm open to the public and open for challange and most certainly interpretation. If your assertions are accurate then the Office of the State's Attorney release a convicted felon in the possession of a weapon. An illegal weapon, I believe (and no I will admit I am not certain of this). With a 20% rise in aggrevated assaults in this community, it is still concerning to an official, and set of officials reporting that they fighting to make the community safe.
I'm not asking you to do anything nor do I really care what you think, you are entitled to your opinion just as anyone else. I've made my position clear and I've stated what the facts are. PJS was made aware of it and it is what it is. Believe it or not...whatever you prefer.
I appreciate the couple of you who weighed in on the state's attorney race. I can't believe more people didn't voice their opinions. I have one supporting Jerry--one for Frank. LOL Not much help.
Spikeless, thank you for your very detailed explanation.
They say we don't really exist, but I continue to be an undecided voter. Tic Tock Decision needs to be made soon......
You're welcome. Vote how you feel YOU should. Ask people you trust for their opinions and why they may have such...
I suspect that whatever your vote may be that you will have considered the issue carefully and that is all that I would ask of any voter. If all voters did so, I wouldn't care what candidate was elected because clearly the public would have won.
Anon:
If you are still undecided, today's arrest listing. Someone with a gun charge pending, let out in about 30 minutes from booking to release. That is what is in office currently. I am sure there is some legal mumbo jumbo to justify it, but it doesn't make people feel or actually be any safer.
