How does Don't Shoot work in schools?

Early this Summer, I approached District 150 about instituting this program, which has been proven to increase parental/citizen involvement in schools. The Program is similar to the Morton 709 Connect Program.

The Board President didn't respond to my e-mail. However, when the Superintendent finally discussed it with another person who approached her with it, she declined. Why? Because The District had enough on their plate and they felt it was more important to focus on the Don't Shoot effort that the City of Peoria was instituting.

This morning, I heard on the scanner chaos and fighting in the lunchroom foyer at Peoria High School.  This past Friday, a group of alleged gang members disrupted the Manual Central Basketball game and were taken into custody. Parents and citizens have questions about how and/or why discipline is and/or is not meted out to teachers and students. And in 2013, citizens are being asked to vote YES on The District increasing taxes.

This morning, a couple of mothers of "gang" members reached out to me to inquire about the next Don't Shoot meeting - they want to attend. They have questions about how students are being rounded up and accused. Unfortunately I didn't have any information for them, so I referred them to the Don't Shoot website, which doesn't show any up coming informational events.

Considering we are dealing with school age children here, shouldn't there be a parent component to Don't Shoot, actively working in the schools? You know, some kind of formal effort before a parent of a "gang" member finds themselves down at the police station.

This question is to the teachers who read this blog: What exactly does Don't Shoot look like inside your school building? I already know you all had assemblies for the students; these students did a video and The District had a poster contest. What else is there; AND more importantly, how well is it going to work if  parents aren't being included?

Sorry for the off topic but I'm wondering what your take is on Foxx's comments about his new movie??

posters don't stop bullets, nor do feel good meetings esp. if people have learned there are little to no consequences for their behavior. The upcoming hug a thug meeting with the chief and the state's attorney has barred media. They will report what happened afterwards. Not the media doesn't gloss over much of the crime in the city anyway, but there is no sunshine on this "meeting." I believe if I remember correctly the last one held on the south end was reported in the media to be a great success, but those present said the gang members smirked the entire time. Peoria is a great place to committ crime. Cookies and cocoa, hugs from cops, 6 minutes in jail. a year or so before you even see a judge and you're out on the streets the entire time with no changes.

@ Vonster...

No, I don't like Jamie Foxx, nor do I support any of his movies. I most certainly am not interested in seeing him in Django.

The general public actually gets to vote on whether or not to grant District 150 a TAX INCREASE to raise money? Are you sure? The newspaper report about this item was buried shortly after it was published, but it did not mention that the decision on tax increase was to be determined by vote... one can only hope that this "vote" will actually happen. Last tax increase in memory was one a few years ago and that was solely the BOE's action, not the public's, I believe.

Sorry for off topic post, but it all relates to your blog in general, Emerge.

Anyhow, thanks for all your efforts.

E: But what about what he said?? It's all over the place...

Anonymous said...

What did he say?

Emerge Peoria said...

@ Vonster...

I dont know what he said. I did not watch SNL, I do not read articles about Jamie Foxx. I'm so unconcerned about Jamie Foxx, that even at this juncture, I don't even feel compelled to Goggle him.

You have a blog, why don't you post about it, provide us a link and we can come over there and comment?

Vonster said...

Some really stupid, racist pro-violence crap. It was on SNL last Sat nite. And the dumbass audience cheered. Google it. It's hard to cut and past on my iPad

Vonster said...

Oh so you know it was on SNL??

Vonster said...

Sorry to be contentious. I just really want to hear your take.

The school I'm at just has posters up for Don't Shoot. I haven't seen it addressed other than that.

Emerge Peoria said...

Of course, I usually watch SNL, I knew Foxx was on there and avoided it.

Sorry to be contentious, but I have no take. Really.

Vonster said...

Seriously? So you're neutral about his disgusting comments??

WOW.

Emerge Peoria said...

@ Vonster....

Seriously.

Did you see this post: http://emergepeoria.blogspot.com/2009/03/im-madd-at-eric-marlon-bishop.html

I wasn't reading your blog 3 years ago. even so, just wondering about this one. no need to insult.

Vonster...

Really. Stop. I'm about to be offended.

I'm not trying to insult or in any way obfusticate - I don't follow Jamie Foxx. Period. Point blank.

One poster hangin in the building and with no consequences what do you expect? I write kids up in the halls for what they say or in the few circumstances where it's been in my room I write them up. I also write in my documentation log and I print the referral and the screen shot of all the referrals made along with any emails to administrators or parents. It's all about cya because even little angels that threaten to jump a coach go back on their teams let alone when a kid tells us to "f--k off". No consequences or very few at least at my school.

I think hijacking this thread for SNL on Saturday is nonsense. I turned it off. There is no reason to continue talking about it.

No matter what Jamie said?? REALLY?

Racism is ok, we get it.

MORTON — The District 709 School Board will hear a comprehensive list of community recommendations Tuesday night, including the goal of feedback to callers.

In six workshops in four months, the 709Connect community engagement coordinating committee came up with 29 suggestions. Committee co-chair Kelly Scarfe said the process was worth the time and effort.

"It was a success because it opened lines of communication," she said. "Residents told the district what they need to know."

Communications was identified as a problem by the School Board after voters soundly rejected a $12.5 million facilities referendum in April 2011. The defeat led to the hiring of UnicomARC, a St. Louis communications firm, to organize a community engagement program. The 20-member coordinating committee was made up of residents and district staff.

Workshops featured speakers and small-group discussions among participants. Detailed reports from each workshop were posted on the district's website, and each workshop was videotaped.

Scarfe said the creation of a long-range plan is one of the most important recommendations. Another is what could be called a "72-hour rule": residents would receive answers to questions, even those asked during board meetings, within 72 hours.

Scarfe said she and committee co-chair Mary Jane Johnson will narrate a Power Point presentation at the board meeting and answer questions, and copies of the committee's recommendations will be available for audience members. The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. in the district's Education & Administration Center, 1050 S. Fourth Ave.

Transparency. Interesting concept.

Why bother with communication when the BOE at 150 can just appropriate the money from the taxpayers sans accountability?

Vonster said...

Just for the record -

“I got a new movie coming out, Django, check it out … Django Unchained, I play a slave. How black is that? In the movie, I have to wear chains. How whack is that? But don’t be worried about it, because I get out [of] the chains, I save my wife, and I kill all the white people in the movie. How great is that? And how black is that?”

That's not funny.

That's the reason why I don't indulge in Jamie Foxx. Next time you see him on television, you should make like Emerge and change the channel. He's not worth the time.

"Don't Shoot" 'invitation' ...or is that code for show up or else it's a parole violation. Sounds like total buy in.
