The "degradation" of local role models continue at PSD150

This Wetterauer issue feels like dejavu all over again. You may recall, that Dr. Rita Ali raised the issue of  the "removal and degradation of competent local role models" in a press conference, held at Charter Oak School in 2012.

It's chilling to hear Dr. Ali speak so succinctly about how the "... culture of fear, intimidation and retaliation... the approaches and bullying tactics are eerily similar to those in which an investigation... by the State of Georgia found to be the underlying problem that resulted in the widespread improprieties within Atlanta Public Schools..." and here we are, several months later, with an investigation into improprieties.

For Dr. Ali, jump to the 3:00 minute and the 14:25 minute mark:

Wow! Dr. Rita Ali covered the problems so well. She would be fantastic on the School Board.

Peoria School District 150 is trying to quell the uproar that's ensued after a popular teacher was placed on paid administrative leave.

In a letter to parents and staff of Charter Oak Primary School, the district says its decision to place principal John Wetterauer on paid leave amid an ISAT score investigation isn't a disciplinary action, it's simply to ensure unbiased internal and external investigations. http://www.1470wmbd.com/150-Clarifies-Principal-s-Employment-Status/17958314

Who is the teacher?
The daughter of a friend of mine was fired by the Georgia Superintendent and reinstated after the super went to jail. She's out now--must have gotten a good settlement because she was recently seen buying a porsch (sp-expensive car). ha!

Under respect our customer on the agenda: ATHLETIC UPDATE code for stadium?? and 4 more houses to buy around PHS.
This should be the meeting to end all meetings.

I agree about Rita.

Will we still be degrading a local role model if it's discovered that he cheated?

Ah, how I miss those days of going out and covering events like this.

The real culprit is BCKB, The rules for Special Ed students are convoluted. These kids should not have to endure the whole process. Perhaps the superintendent herself can be blamed for lack of training for teachers who administer the test--espcially, since special rules apply for these students. If the principal is culpable why not the superintendent--neither were present during the testing.

Maybe I am mistaken because I thought I heard or read it somewhere that the superintendant wanted grades changed. That if the teacher gave a student a flunking grade, the superintendent had it changed. I might be wrong in saying this. And if I am, I apologize. I just find it odd that this many students can graduate from high school here in Peoria and not make it past the first semester of college due to not being able to read, etc. Says something about our high schools. I think it is wrong to defame those teachers at Charter Oak as well as the principal. The two special ed teachers are good teachers and I would find it hard to believe they would do something like this. Board, please due your job and dismiss Lathan. She has made you and the district the laughing stock of the state. You let her so you are responsible. You should have taken action several years ago to get rid of her and wouldn't.

One of the big things in the district right now is making sure all the teachers received and read the grading policy. I am still having a difficult time with the fact that students who "make an effort" and yet receive something like a 20% on the assignment are given a 50% in skyward and that is POLICY! I wonder why they are they are pushing so hard to have everyone "aware of district grading policy" right now.

Lathan has got to go. I can't believe they are letting her push out another well liked, upstanding principal. This school board is so far beyond ridiculous. The superintendent spends money like we have it on expensive hotels, meals, and TAX and we give her a bonus. This principal walks into each classroom every day and works on playground and in lunchroom and he is put on administrative leave?.!?

Seems pretty obvious who is causing more damage in 150, but why should I expect anyone to listen to me. I'm just in a classroom every day, not sitting around the BOE table once a month.

Sharon, you are correct about SPED rules & laws. Every SPED student has an IEP, which stands for INDIVIDUAL educational program. Somebody needs to send the superintendent a list of accommodations that students are allowed, if the disability of that student can benefit from said accommodation.

One accommodation NOT on any IEP is to test at grade level student is presently working at. Deficits of students with disabilities is not accounted for, except for the severely physically or mentally disabled. Then the teachers make a portfolio of work from that student and submit it for NCLB. NCLB does not appropriately address students with disabilities. It make it hard to shove a test in front of the student and have him/her so frustrated because comprehension isn't at the grade level they are in.

Please, somebody stop Dr. Lathan. If the school board is blind to her, then parents need to stand up and be heard. I suppose parents from Charter Oak is the reason for the BOE meeting being moved to VonSteuben's new gym.

THE COMMUNITY MUST AS A WHOLE GO AFTER EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THESE BOARD SEATS. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN STOP THIS FRANKENSTEIN OF A SCHOOL BOARD.REPLACE THE SCHOOL BOARD = REPLACE LATHAN. THIS IS HOW WE DO IT IN AMERICA. PETELLE IS FIRST.

A year ago,at a board meeting I presented proof (in writing and in public comments, which no one has refuted, that 33 out of 225 (K-8) retentions had been changed--overruling teacher decisions and without notifying teachers. Nobody denied any of my data, etc.
Yes, at this point, the school board members are the most culpable--as Terry Knapp pointed out to one board member at the last meeting--you are her boss, not her friend.

Won't it be wonderful for the students if Latham's reign of terror was finally coming to an end? Discipline would return to the schools. Students could once again learn in a safe and motivating environment.

Beep, beep, beep. The wonderful sound of moving trucks backing up to haul the School Board and Latham away!

Can anyone justify Ross, Costic, Butler, and Wolfmeyer, along with Lathan going to the National School Board Conference in NEW ORLEANS? I just read it in the agenda and back up material for Mondaynights meeting. Can anyone explain to me what FUND this money is coming from? Teachers don't have necessary supplies but the idiots on the school board are jet setting around the country. If the district feels the need to attend, send one person not an entourage. Very few, if any boards in this area send ANYONEto this conference. I would like a list of every session they will be attending and none should be going to the SAME session. I am sick of this administration spending, spending, spending....on themselves. Say NO to this waste of money.

This needs to be mentioned on Monday by a union member. Cost?? Reason for going??
All trips should be on hold.

Sharon Crews said...

The cost for each and the fund are listed with the agenda--education fund, of course. I am betting someone will mention the trip at the board meeting--too good to pass up.
Remember their excuses for needing new $500+ chairs. They all gave their reasons but foremost was that the room needs to look good for the public, etc.

December 16th through December 23rd is the filing window to run for the open School Board seat (Petelle).

You only need around 325 signatures.

Who is going to step up?

Re Sharon's comment: "Perhaps the superintendent herself can be blamed for lack of training for teachers who administer the test...etc"

Sharon, some of these impropoer testing allegations date back to 2008.

Dr. Lathan didn't start until 2010.

John Wetterauer is a beacon of independent excellence in what has become a fog of political appointees and terrified administrators. There was a time in Peoria when Principals were considered by Superintendents to be the "principal" academic leaders of schools and community leaders. This brought us leaders like the Hinton brothers, Mrs. Perkins, and many others. There like would not be tolerated by Grenita Lathan. To paraphrase E. Gray on the eve of W.W.1: "The lights have gone out, I fear that we will not them again for a long time" Pray for Charter Oak and our district.

Just drove past board room. Looks like people are camping out to ensure they get a good seat at tomorrow night's meeting.

Do you have to be a resident of a school district to speak at a board meeting? For example, can a Peoria resident speak at a Dunlap school board meeting?

Anonymous said...

You can speak. In Peoria, you give name and address before speaking.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous at 6:56 pm Thank you for the clarification. There is a rumor floating around that only residents of a school district may speak at a board meeting.

Dennis, don't let facts get in the way of a good storyline. Besides, if there was any wrongdoing by a teacher (or even a principal in this case), don't you know that it was merely due to lack of training - NOT cheating?

Personally, I love how, despite there being no facts presented, so many people are certain Wetterauer is innocent.....and Lathan guilty. And if it's discovered the other way around, well then blame NCLB.

Someone should circulate a petition to get on the ballot for Petelle school board seat tomorrow at the board meeting. Pick up a packet at the D150 office and petition forms should be in there.

Sharon Crews said...

The meeting is at Von Steuben--expecting a large crowd. To speak at the BOE meeting you must fill out a card before the meeting starts.
Dennis, if it started in 2008, why did Lathan wait until 2013 to take any action? And why can't the blame be laid at her feet for the last three years--assuming anything wrong was done?
I firmly believe that this is her plot to get rid of the principal just as she planned to get rid of all the others. Also, I believe with all the threats about going to Springfield to open an investigation about her, she decided to get out in front of the march to Springfield.
Just analyze all that led to the demotion or firing of other principals and you will see a very clear pattern. In almost every case, a disagreement between Lathan and the principal occurred--and her plan was immediately set into motion--do anything to catch him or her doing anything wrong or that can be "sold" as wrong.
Also, every year it is her job to see to it that all principals and teachers (who administer the test) are apprised of all the rules--that's her job.
What was she doing last year just before the test--barcoding books that had to be returned to students when it dawned on her that students needed to prepare for the test.

Just went to the disyrict's web site to brush up on the Remarkable Rules. Scrolling across the top in red and green letters it reads, "Ten $100.00 District 150 purchasing cards will be issued to the first ten people at tonight's board meeting."

So a culture of fear, intimidation, and retaliation led to adults cheating and lying? Wow. The lengths folks will go to in abrogating personal responsibility...in Georgia as well as Illinois.

I am deeply disappointed in the inaction of the District 150 School Board at the Dec. 16 board meeting in regards to the suspension of Charter Oak Principal John Wetterauer. It was absolutely shocking to see a group of elected officials take no action and make no comment. It made me wonder if they stand for the same values their constituents do.
Grenita Lathan appeared busy taking notes for over an hour as speakers expressed their support for Mr. Wetterauer, but I never once saw her turn the page. Besides adjusting her jewelry, that pen was her only means to avoid eye contact with the audience. Neither the allegations nor the preliminary findings of the internal investigation — which are aimed solely at discrediting one of our best principals — justify the defamation of John Wetterauer's character.
However, they speak volumes about the District 150 School Board and its superintendent. The fate of one of Peoria's best schools is in the hands of people who are deaf to our pleas for justice and fairness. While School Board President Rick Cloyd read the statement, most likely prepared by an overpaid Chicago-area attorney, Principal Wetterauer was busy volunteering at a local food pantry for the poor.
Shame on you, District 150 School Board.
