The Senate Judiciary Committee has voted to approve Sonia Sotomayor as Supreme Court justice. This clears the path for Sotomayor's historic confirmation as the Court's first Hispanic justice.

Sotomayor (known around the GOP as "the wise Latina") was told early on that “You'll have lots of 'splainin' to do". For days on end she fielded a series of ludicrous questions. However, she managed to keep it classy and withstood a line of questioning in which she was asked everything short of reciting the lyrics to "America" from West Side Story.

Is this the Court's first Latina Justice?

Wikipedia states this about Sonia Sotomayor:

Sonia Sotomayor a 54 year old federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, was nominated by President Barack Obama for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice David Souter. Sotomayor is of Latina of Puerto Rican descent, and was born in the Bronx. Her father died when she was nine, and she was raised by her mother. Sotomayor graduated with an A.B., summa cum laude, from Princeton in 1976, and received her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1979, where she was an editor at the Yale Law Journal.
